How to clean dirty day and night shades

A reader named Janet wrote to RVtravel.com with this question: Do you have any advice for her?

I am searching to find the best way to clean dusty dirty day night shades. We are remodeling a 1998 fifth wheel that has had two owners. The shades are visibly dirty when you raise both to the top. I can find how to re-string them (which I need to do) but I can't find anything about the best/safest way to clean/wash them. I don't want them to mildew and I don't want the metal to rust. Any guidance?
