Drive up to a glacier

Driving to Alaska, you have a choice of routes leading to Watson Lake. You can take the Alaska Highway from Dawson Creek, the most common route, or you can take the Cassiar Highway north from New Hazelton, British Columbia.

If you take the latter route, a side trip at Mezadian Junction, about 100 miles north of New Hazelton, leads to Stewart, BC, and Hyder, Alaska. Along the way, the road passes in front of Bear Glacier. Hyder is lots of fun and offers good chances for bear viewing just outside of town. It is unique in the United States in that most of its currency transactions are in Canadian dollars, since the only banks in the area are in Stewart. The one exception is the post office. Stamps will have to be paid for in U.S. currency.

  • Hyder, AK is worth the trip and has two restaurants that serve outstanding food. The "Wild Flour" is on the main road and "Premier Seafood" is one block off the main road. We have been twice and stayed in Stewart both times at Bear Creek Campground. Its less expensive that the campgrounds in Hyder and has large grassy sites. We recommend going to Alaska one way and returning the other.

  • We've been to Alaska 3 times. The 2 times we drove we camped in Hyder. Would not go to Alaska without spending time in Hyder. Very nice campground run by great people and neat places to explore. Good place to get away from the traveling frenzy.

  • We live in Alaska and take this route often.Hyder is a very unique place. We counted 32 bear between Hwy 16 and Dease Lake on one trip in May.
Have seen numerous moose with babies. One cow with triplets.Keep your camera handy on this road.

  • The sidetrip to Stewart and Hyder was a highlight of our Alaska trip.Stayed in Hyder for three nights.Saw numerous grizzly bears at the Fish Creek viewing area outside Hyder.Salmon glacier is 20 miles further. The road to the glacier is a little rough but we made it in our 23 foot Class C.Beautiful views-great wildlife.Hyder/Stewart has it all.

  • Been there..done that...and a fantastic experience. Would recommend Bear Creek Campground in Stewart, B.C......would also recommend 1st part of August when the salmon are running. Real grizzlies in a natural environment, watched them for hours with our grand kids. Couldn't buy the value of the experience with a million bucks.

  • We've also been to Alaska three times and twice we took the Cassier one way and the Alcan the other. If you go do keep going through Hyder and up to the view of the Salmon Glacier. The road lets you look down on the ice flow. We camp in Stewart and have had good meals at the Bitter Creek Cafe in Stewart and at the seafood trailer in Hyder. Not crowded and fantastic views from the roads.
