RVer's Motorhome Impounded Over Canada Gun Violation
The moral of the story may be: Don't lie to the customs folk.James Yarbro, a church elder from Alabama should have known better than to "fib" about packing a pistol when he and his wife pulled off the ferry in Nova Scotia. The 67 year old had already one chance to come clean: When rolling his motorhome onto the ferry he had to fill out a form that declared he was not carrying a firearm. He checked the box that indicated he wasn't. His last chance was when he spoke to Canadian officials who directly asked if he was carrying a weapon. Nope.
Not quite: Customs officials who inspected Yarbro's motorhome found a .357 magnum in the overhead compartment not far from the driver's seat. That's a no-no north of the Lower 48. Yarbro found out it isn't nice to fib to the officers. Mr. Yarbro's motorhome was impounded by the Maple Leaf officials; Yarbro himself had to appear in the Queen's court to explain his behavior.
After pleading guilty to failing to report his weapon, Yarbro paid a $500 fine. That was far from the end of the matter: He was nicked an additional $500 for failing to safely store the weapon; and to get his motorhome back, Yarbro had to pony up an additional $1,000. It's not clear whether Yarbro ever got his big pistol back. Reporters met the Yarbros at the ferry dock as they headed back to Maine. It might be understandable that when queried about his exploits, Yarbro commented: "I just really don’t want to talk to you anymore," he said. "I want to get home and I don’t want to talk to anybody up here about anything else."
Before carrying a weapon to Canada, visit the official website on these matters.

This is rich! An elder of the church caught flagrantly breaking the law and lying about it twice. What's happened to good old southern god-fearing values?

If the law states NO guns in Canada, then take your rip roaring "I need it for protection because we trust no one" and stay where you do not feel safe. Most people carry guns NOT for protection, but because the Constituation tells them they have a right to"bear arms". If you are that afraid, stay home.

I guess you are not from around the deep south bruce. For most of us having a fire arm with us is like you having a pen knife in your pocket. It is part of you and you just do not think about it. Don't be so critical, I am sure you have lied about something in the past.

Our laws are very clear; Canadians cannot carry weapons and neither can visitors. We do not need weapons here and tourists do not need them for protection. Anyone visiting our campgrounds will have lots of friendly neighbours who will help in time of need. You don't need a .357 to fix a flat tire and that's probably going to be your biggest concern.

Fred,
We're not talking about a penknife here, but a 357 magnum. Which you carry for just one thing, and it ain't opening redneck beer bottles.
If Southerners are all packing heat, maybe I'll go somewhere else.
Give peace a chance.

When we left Alabama in 1964 I thought the days of "Give me my gun, a car full of African Americans (politically correct)ran me off the road". Now I find there are still people like Fred out there.

I would not be alive today if I did not have a hand gun to protect me from harm. Minding my own business and not looking for trouble.
We will never ever set foot in Canada because of their restrictions on everything. Lots of the great USA to see. Keeping our money in this country.

Good, stay where you are. We don't want you, your 97c dollar, or your xenophobia here in Canada.
When I visit the US or any other country I expect to have to obey the laws of the land. Likewise, I expect foriegners visiting Canada will do the same.
I notice that you seem to be in the minority when compared with the responses of your fellow Ammericans, most of whom, in my experience, are friendly, helpful, and respectful. An automotive technician from the USA saved my RV vacation from mechanical disaster this year in Newfoundland.

Guns....the scourge of the earth. In Canada, if I have a fight with my neighbor, I know he isn't going to get a gun and shoot me, however, here in the US, I read in the Orlando paper just Saturday, December 8th. a man who was backing into his driveway was almost hit by a neighbor,a lady who was speeding down the street. He blew his horn and told her to slow down. Minutes later her brother was at the mans door with another relative, and shot him dead. What a stupid system of values. I still prefer traveling in Canada, wish I could do it year round.

Being a church elder only means he is "trying" to be a good Christian. The man should not have lied, no matter what his church affiliation. (No one forgets that they have a gun and where it is.) He was a bad example and probably won't be telling anyone why he will never go to Canada again! I am from the US and say this: abide by the laws no matter where you are and don't lie about anything either. (Mom always said that if you don't lie, you won't have trouble remembering what you said.)

Nothing makes me more sick to my stomach than self-righteous Canadians.
Most of the US is quite safe, and the high murder and assault rates are skewed by small but highly dangerous inner-city and low-income centers.
The rate of violent assaults in Canadian cities is roughly equal to that in the US.
The prison population of Canada is also highly skewed, according to the Wikipedia:
Although aboriginal persons make up 3.6% of Canada's population, they account for more than 20% of Canada's prison population.
The situation is similar in the US, only you replace aboriginal with African-American. It's regrettable, preventable, but nonetheless a fact.
Sexual assault in Qeuebec is 70 victims per 100,000 population.
The rate of rape is slightly higher in Canada than the US (35 vs 32 per 100K population)
Canada has the 5th highest number of rapes per capita of any country, roughly 10x as many as the EU average.
