Jerry Dale, representing Blue Ox Towing, offers a short tip to RVtravel.com readers about backing up a motorhome with a dinghy in tow. "Don't ever do this," warns Jerry.
We CAN back up. Blue Ox doesn't sell it, but M&G used to make a tow bar that does allow you back up while towing. We have had ours for five years, towing first a '02 Saturn SL2, currently a '04 Honda CR-V. We can back up in a straight line, or on a curve.
Unfortunately, M&G no longer manufactures this tow bar, but they do still make a tow braking system.
I have backed up many times while towing. You must have some one in the tow vehical to hold the steerin;g wheel in the straight line while backing slowly.
If its a short distance backing up is not a problem. If you are turning it is a bigger problem than if you have been traveling in a strait line. You must have someone hold the steering wheel in the same position as when you stopped and back up slowly. i have backed up numerous times and sometimes as far as 100 feet.
Many RVers who travel with motorhomes pull along a car, SUV or small truck. These towables are typically referred to as dinghies or toads. We like the sticker found on many of these vehicles' back bumpers: "I go where I am toad." In this blog, we'll review vehicles suitable for towing behind an RV, and we'll keep you up-to-date on the latest news about dinghy towing.
