RV rail tours through Copper Canyon discontinued

El Paso, Texas-based Tracks to Adventure no longer offers its railroad tours into Mexico's Copper Canyon after the Mexican government decided to prohibit the practice of allowing RVers to stay in their motorhomes or trailers that rode atop flat cars while traveling through the picturesque canyon in the northern state of Chihuahua. According to RV Business, the Mexican government said the practice was not safe, although Tracks President Larry Olsen said there had been no serious mishaps during the 33 years that he arranged trips for some 8,000 RVers. Tracks still offers the Copper Canyon tour but now RVs are parked and visitors take the 172-mile-long canyon rail in passenger cars.

  • Why go to a third world country on vacation. Stay home and get drinking water from black water tank.

  • Sorry to see that go. It was one of our dream trips when we retire. Oh well, at the price of gas I probably wouldn't have gotten down there anyway.

  • Can you take your dogs or other animals along on the passenger train?

  • You take a big chance if you RV into Mexico. They'll steal the teeth out of your mouth....and anything else of value. Stay in the good old USA.

  • We took this trip 3 years ago with Adventure Caravans and it was the best trip we ever had. We saw so much.Far better than a passenger train. We sat on our lawn chairs and watched the scenery go by at a leasurely pace. We recommended it to everyone.Too bad it has to end.

  • Based on what I have been reading in the news about travel in Mexico, this just makes it more convenient for the roving bands of thieves to access easy pickings. What could be better than a whole bunch of nice RV's parked together in one spot without anyone there for security? We have promised ourselves for years that we would go to Mexico, but not now.

  • Count me among those who are really sorry to see the Copper Canyon trips end because it has always been on my wish list.

For those of you who are negative on taking your RV to Mexico, my question is, have you tried it? We have been RVing in Baja for over 40 years without any serious incidents. Yes you need to be cautious, buy Mexican insurance and drive only during the daylight hours, but it is a great getaway. Camping on an isolated beach with a group of friends in Baja is about as good as camping gets. IMO, the biggest inconvenience is simply crossing the border, especially coming home.

  • Probably the BEST thing to happen to RV'ing in a long time. It was the biggest RIP OFF in the industry, when U can take the train & get a BETTER view of the canyon for 1/200th of the price!

    Good riddance!
