Alaska Bound? Don't Leave Before You Read This!

If you expect orders to Alaska or are planning to travel to Alaska this summer you may want to visit these military campgrounds. Oh, and I seriously recommend that you purchase a copy of the 2007 Alaska Milepost – please don’t travel in Alaska without one of these! 2007 MilepostFirst up is Birch Lake Recreation Area (GPS: 64.3195, -146.6506) which has 34 RV sites ($18.00 per night) with 30 amp hook-ups but no sewer or dump station. They also have cabins for rent but no indoor plumbing. What do you expect, It’s Alaska!

The second Eielson run famcamp is Bear Lake Family Camp (GPS: 64.703053, -147.11565) situated on a lake newly-stocked for fishing. Open Memorial Day through Labor Day. It has 41 camper pads ($16/day) and eight tent sites ($10/day). Only water and electric hook-ups are available. Amenities include on-site dump stations, showers, bathrooms, laundry facilities and an office open 7 days a week during the summer. Moose frequent this campground which has all pull through sites. Moose don't like back-in sites!

For more information on both these campgrounds call (907) 377-1317 or visit the website here: Eielson AFB MWR Link
Elmendorf AFB Famcamp (GPS: 61.2383, -149.7517) has 60 back-in sites with 30/50 amp hook-ups at $16.00 a day. Elmendorf has a nice large exchange and commissary on base. They have two dump stations, showers and a laundry. Call (907) 552-2023 or visit the website here: Elmendorf AFB MWR Link
Just north of Anchorage you’ll find Black Spruce RV Park (GPS: 61.26, -149.7245) with 43 pull-through sites at $17.00 a pop. 39 have 30 amps with full hook-ups and 4 sites with electric only. The sites are close together and do not give you that “secluded” feeling, if you know what I mean. This campground is old and needs a facelift. (907) 384-1476

Near Fairbanks you’ll find Glass Park RV Park & Outdoor Adventure (GPS: 64.833756, -147.691494) They have 20 sites ($22.00) with 50/30 amp, water, telephone and CATV connections, and barbecue grills. Both dump stations are free. They also have eight sites for dry camping only. Contact them at (907) 353-6349 or visit their website here: Glass Park Link
