Big Quartzsite RV show set for January

The 25th Annual Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show is coming January 19-27, 2008 to the RV boondocking capital of the world, Quartzite, Arizona. From its humble beginnings the now-massive show has grown to RV-epic proportions, drawing an estimated 150,000 visitors for each season's show. Admission is free as is camping on the nearby government lands, where RVers claim a bit of dusty desert soil for their very own. Quartzsite is no fun in the summer when the temp tops 100 degrees as often as not. In the winter, when the town of a few hundred permanent residents swells to tens of thousands at a time (most in recreational vehicles), the temperature is typically mild with sunny skies, so if you show up bring shorts and suntan lotion. Photos are from the 2006 show.

Naked bookseller a popular guy in Quartzsite

Most residents and visitors of Quartzsite have visited the town’s only permanent bookstore, operated by Paul Winer, who is best known for what he doesn’t have than what he has. What he does not have is clothes on his body as he goes about his daily work, including waiting on customers. He likes to tell the story about how he was America’s original exotic male entertainer, which means he did his act sans clothes. His store is an entertaining desert oasis for book lovers, stuffed with mostly used books, but some new ones as well. And there are magazines and DVDs and other stuff. This is not a store to bring children, but it is THE place for grownups to visit in Quartzsite to find a book. In this short, poor quality video, Winer talks about his store and his life as the "Naked Bookseller."
