Fleetwood at it Again--110 More Workers Breadlined

After closing down three US plants, then announcing the opening of a new plant in Mexico, RV manufacturer Fleetwood has hit the news again. Friday the California based firm announced the "consolidation" of two Canadian manufacturing plants, both in Lindsay, Ontario. In a news article carried by RV Business, Fleetwood representative Heather Everett told a media member via electronic mail, "I can confirm that we laid off 110 associates from our Lindsay, Ontario manufacturing facility as a result of plant consolidation. While it was difficult for us to reach this decision, it is a necessary step in order for us to remain a viable competitor in the towable marketplace."

Fleetwood’s earlier decision to open an RV plant and pay Mexican workers $4 an hour to assemble RVs for US sale has infuriated readers of this blog. Dozens of readers say they will swear off future purchases of Fleetwood rigs.

  • I wrote an e-mail to Fleetwood PR and got an answer back stating just how loyal 'Fleetwood' was to their North American customers!
They let me know that it was only a small part of their operations that they were moving to Mexico. That they still had a lot of plants here in the states and of course the plants in Canada!
Well we can see how well that panned out!!!

  • DELPHI RETIREE HERE! Spun off from GM, I will NEVER even look at a Fleetwood.
I worked for GM, later the Bankrupt Delphi Corporation, for 36 years. Now after opening overseas operations, went bankrupt and my pension and medical benifits that I spent most of my life working for is on the chopping block.
They are paying exec. bonus based on the overseas profits. But not my pension.
    Tip of the iceberg? Yes.
I will go out of my way to tell people NOT to buy from Fleetwood. I
I guess they are bowing to the
    God of the dollar sign.

  • As consumers, we need to take a stand. How many more manufactures are going to move to Mexico? We are concerned about our borders, but not our workers? The only way this manufacturer is going to realize what they are doing is wrong is buy hitting there pocket book!!!! Make sure you tell EVERYONE NOT TO BUY FLEETWOOD!!!!!!!!!!
