Unusual traffic accidents coming soon to RV snowbird areas

As the first dusting of snow hits parts of North America, many RVers thoughts turn to sunshine, warmth, and heading south for the winter in their trailers and motorhomes. In Arizona, it means trailer and RV parks that have been mostly empty during the not summer months will start to fill, traffic congestion will increase and sheriff's deputies in Maricopa County, which includes the greater Phoenix area, will soon be investigating three accidents a week -- involving golf carts! "People will drive them five miles to get to the store," sheriff's Lt. Chad Brackman told Salt Lake City’s Deseret News. "They can be licensed so they're legal on the road, but cars don't see them."

They can be licensed & legal on the roads?? Wow! As more people find out about this, I would expect it to turn into an even bigger problem. Is this just in AZ., or do other states allow this also? I've found golf carts to be extremely popular with snowbirds in FL. A couple of those flourescent colored fiberglass driveway markers attached to the rear corners would make them more visible. Boats have marker lights mounted on a pole that can be purchased at many dept. stores such as WAl-Mart, and could easily be mounted and wired into the electrical system on these carts. Have someone that knows what they are doing, do this for you. Check laws on color of lenses.

In South Dakota ATV's can be made street legal with appropriate lights and a horn and are becoming more popular on Sioux Falls streets as they get better gas mileage than some other vehicles. In my hometown with population less than 500, the problem with golf carts on the streets is that kids are driving them. Some are younger than 10 years old! Oh yea, and one old man that is legally blind.

Where we live in Florida, you can drive a golf cart on any street where the speed limil is 35MPH or less as long as it is registered and insured.

I remember an old woman in a small town in Montana who lost her drivers icense, so she ended up driving her farm tractor into town.
