Beach Campers Report Terror in Mexico

SignOnSanDiego.com, a web site of the Union Tribune newspaper reports that Americans are increasingly reporting robberies by paramilitary types along the Baja coast. While the site indicates reports are incomplete, and much of their information comes from tallies of internet sites, there are some solid reports of some scary incidents along the Mexican coastline.

In one account, the owner of a California surfer academy said his camping group was set upon by men wearing military clothing and ski masks. Pat Weber said he and his girl friend at first refused to come out of their motorhome--until shots were fired through it. Once outside he says, "They made us get down on all fours -- execution position -- and put guns to our heads." Weber's girlfriend was sexually assaulted by the gunmen, and the banditos left with $10,000 worth of high tech gear. The incident reportedly took place Cuatro Casas, 200 miles south of the US border.

The web site says many Americans say they have experienced similar situations but are afraid to report them to Mexican authorities, choosing to speak out once they get back to the states.

The owner of a tourism club in California says their organization has been calling on Baja tourism authorities to investigate and handle the situation, lest the Mexican state sees a decline in US visitors fearing they'll become crime victims. For the whole story, visit the news site.

  • It is way past time that RVers stopped going to Mexico. To do so is like playing Russian Roulette with yourself and your loved ones.

  • Why go to an unsafe place when there are so many places that you can go to and not have to be afraid? Doesn't make sense to me.

  • You just convinced me to stay out of Mexico with my RV. Mexico just lost about $500+ dollars I would have spent while their.

  • Why would anyone want to go to a third-world country on vacation. Just stay home and get your water from BLACKWATER tank you will get same thrill

  • I am given to understand that when traveling in an RV, whatever the style, it becomes ones domicile. The Second Amendment in our great country gives us the right to protect ourselves and our families from thugs. Why go to Mexico to spend your money in a land of lawlessness?

  • That is one place that is NOT on our list to visit.

There are many interesting places to see and visit in the USA.

  • They can get away with this because they know gingo's are not allowed to have a gun with them for their protection.

  • I had thought about going to mexico in my RV, but after reading this article NO Way!! There are too many places in the US, Canada, and Alaska to see.

  • One questionable story and you are ready to condemn an entire country. I think you are more likely to be a victim of violent crime in the US than in Mexico. Mexico has a deeper, richer and older culture than any other country in this hemisphere. The food is fresher and better for you. The people are warm and friendly. And the RV parks are getting crowded, so on second thought, stay home. More for us, the thousands that appreciate Mexico.

  • You couldn't pay me to go to Mexico, unless it was to clean up the the banditos.

  • When my father and his friend retired, his friend bought a new motorhome, drove into Baja Mexico and were never heard from again. The motorhome was found burned to the ground with the skeletal remains of dads friend and friends wife inside. There were bullet holes in the skulls They were murdered within 90 days of retirement, and probably in the first 3 days of their venture into Baja. No one has ever been arrested for this crime.

We have been robbed at gun point, moticed by the Federales over parking infractions and harrased at times by thugs and protitutes. (oops, never mind that was our life in Washington DC)

On the other hand we have had wonderful times in the bigger Mexican tourist areas. We fly in, eat dine and stay for a few days and fly out. Each visit is a new experiance. We love the people,we go to Mass with the locals, shop with the locals and generally feel safe in daylight hours. We rarely go out at night and never by ourselves. Even the panhandlers are very polite.

We wear no jewlery, wear old clothes, worn shoes and beat up Timex watchs. We blend in enough for the locals to think we are Mexican gringos. Before we go to Mexico I shave my head and grow a very ragged beard. (I look good bald and beautiful, wife thinks NOT)

With the preceived gtowing crime rate we have been pretty lucky. We are probably not going to go back. At our age it may be getting a little risky for medical reasons.

  • I have never heard of anyone camping or rv'ing in the US or Canada that has been terrorized, hurt or murdered. I have only heard of this happening in Mexico. Why go there!? There are wonderful people in the US and Canada, too. Mexico doesn't have a monopoly on nice people. But you can be much safer camping north of the Mexican border.

  • My wife and I have spent many of the winters, during the nine years we have been full time rving, in Mexico, both the Baja and in the mainland. We have never had a problem and find the people (once you are away from the border) to be some of the most friendly and warm people in the world and we have traveled plenty. An incident such as this happens hundreds of times a day in the U.S.

  • Unfortunately all comments can be accounted for as correct and true. The good news as well as the bad news
We have spend awesome vacations in Mexico, visiting the historical places, as well as tourist areas. Meeting the friendly people and listening to their m music. We have never had any problems ourself, because we look poor, we wear no jewlery, wear old clothes, worn shoes, no cameras or video equipment. We blend in enough for the locals to think we are Mexican gringos.
Yet we also have been witnesses to robberies in open daylight, tour bus kidnapping and more. Once we were traveling with a mexican guide and she was very nervous to get home, becaue we were running late and she was concerned for everybody's safety. It is my understanding that the police is very corrupt due to low pay. Regardless we will continue visiting, as it is such a beautiful place.

  • a comment to Carol:
Yes there have been robberies and murders here in the US too. One couple was murdered while parking in the Wal-Mart parking lot in St.George Utah. They had a Florida license plate and a gunman demanded to be driven to Florida. After they refused he shot them in the head.

  • "Because the cops don't need you;
And man, they expect the same"
(Bob Dylan – in the mid 60s - in regard to Juarez - but pretty much as true today, and for a lot of Mexico.)

The Mexican government doesn't put a very high priority on tourism. They have some brochures with pretty pictures; but once you're in the country, they could care less about whether you're bringing in tourist dollars. Drugs pay more. Shaking down the tourists is a quicker profit, than providing legitimate services. The Mexican government doesn’t seem concerned that the tourists don’t want to come anymore.

Mexico has breath-taking unique scenery, beautiful beaches, and a consistently warmer climate in winter than anywhere in the continental US. (Of course, there's Hawaii, but you need to buy an expensive plane ticket - and there's crime in Hawaii too.)

But until Mexico cleans up police corruption and gets tough on crime (not likely soon); we're staying away.

  • I just returned from beautiful Lake Chapala an hour's drive below Guadalajara. I believe I'll be returning but will again fly down and rent for a couple of winter months. There's one RV park already in the area and another being built. But that long drive, by myself, is turning me off and I doubt I'll take my RV. It is a safe, beautiful area and I recommend anyone checking it out. The lake is 50 miles long, the villages clean and the people friendly. It has a large expat community, people from the U.S., Canada and Europe.
