Couple escapes burning RV

A man and his girlfriend escaped unharmed from an RV that burst into flames Nov. 1 in Monroe, Michigan. The Monroe Fire Department reported the fire ignited inside the 1992 Jamboree motorhome while the couple slept inside. Around 1 a.m., the couple awoke to smoke and flames and they had to jump over the fire to escape. By the time firefighters arrived, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. A space heater was cited as the cause of the fire.

  • There is a recall on Ford based Jamboree's that could cause a fire, even when not running. Take it to your local Ford dealer for a fix.

  • phillip, I doubt the Ford Company would fix it, if it's an added on Space Heater that was the cause of the problem. I also didn't read anything in the story about it even being a Ford Based Jamboree? Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you jump to a couple of conclusions there? Also anonymous, it doesn't say it was an electric heater, but if you are using one it probably would be a better idea to switch to a catalytic type heater with a safety turn over switch. More costly but what is your life and possessions worth to you?

  • Most electric heaters have a safety turnover switch and they don't consume oxygen which a catalytic heater does unless you have a fully-vented type.

Assuming the heater itself didn't start burning (a rare occurance), most electric heater-related fires are either from the ignition of something flamable that is too close to the heater or the electrical wiring getting too hot because of too much current draw.

Most electrical heaters draw a lot of current when turned on high. We never leave ours on high during the night for that reason.

Likewise, we leave the heater on the kitchen counter or dining table with nothing around it.
