RVers Work Around Colorado Water War

If you live in Summit County, Colorado, you know that water is scarce. County rules prohibit the 'unlawful' use of water taken from "household use only" wells. What's unlawful? Washing the car. Watering the lawn. Filling the hot tub.

Water has become so hard to come by in these parts that some ranchers are facing livelihood extinction when they can't get enough water to meet their livestock needs. Lots of folks in the area own "second homes," and for them, a hot tub is just a given. That is if you can fill it.

Homeowners Glenn and Judith Nichols have found a work-around for filling their play pool. They fire up their motorhome and head off to an RV park. After paying to stay on, they tank up the RV fresh water tank and head home, pumping it into their hot tub. Others have gone so far as to head out to Walmart and purchase bottled water by the gallon to fill their tubs.

For more information on this not-so-funny issue, check out The Denver Post.

  • And the Nichols' "work around" was the right thing to do because...?

I urger everyone to read the entire Denver Post article, and particularly the follow up letters for a cogent discussion of the issues here.

  • So I wonder if that Thomas guy who responded to the Denver Post doesn't realize that when he dies, his grave will leave a scar on the land and take space from the animals, to deposit his lifeless sack into it or will he pollute the air like an SUV if he gets cremated? He is also using oxygen the little animals need to breathe. I suppose he could be buried at sea and provide nutrients to the fishes but I kinda think Colorado is a little landlocked, but don't quote me on that. Next he will be attacking RVers and eliminating the joy we feel each time we get a chance to visit a spectacular place like Colorado, by saying we pollute too much and we should stay at home and do nothing 24/7. Oh yeah, what a guy, and what happens to RVers when they are visiting and run out of water in Summit County? If we get a drink of water in a cafe are we stealing some one else's water? Some people go overboard, especially the crack on the militarism of the Boy Scouts! Come on, dude! Their uniforms represent the unity of spirit well known in the Boy Scouts, for the respect they hold for America and the environment. I see nothing "cogent" in his remarks and it sounds to me like he would rather the world was an empty place except for himself and the animals. The grizzlies would like that also, Hmmmm-dinner!

  • I think what the Nicols did was disgusting. My family has lived in Colorado since the 1890's. My grandparents had to hand dig their water well and had to hand pump water for livestock, their garden and every day living until they got electricity in the 40's.

They had to live with droughts and low well levels just to survive.

For the Nichols to get water just so they can enjoy their hot tub is crappy, and selfish. No matter how much snow we get, Colorado is still a high desert and people who live here need to get remember that amd make adjustments.

  • This is defeating the purpose of saving water! Unless they travel out of state someplace where there is no water restrictions.
Colorado is going to run out of water someday. This winter we have had great snow fall but some winters we get minimal snow.

  • Years ago we were in a water ban in Oregon. However I had green grass in my yard the local newscast came over and questioned how I had watered grass. "It was simple" I replied "everytime I went boating out on the lake I just pulled the plug on the boat when I put it on the trailer and filled it with some water then parked the boat on the lawn I drained it" and when they came over I had just started to drain the boat.'

  • I would have thought more of the RVer if he had offered to take water to the farm animals that needed it, instead of to his hot tub. Penny, TX

  • It's unclear from the initial description, whether the RVer went to a local RV park - that was presumably under similar water-use restrictions - or went to some RV park where there were no water restrictions and (presumably) an ample supply for whatever desires were "whimmed". It's also conceivable that they went to the RV park as much for fun (as do many weekend RVers), as for water.

Perhaps it would be appropriate to find out all the facts, before praising or criticizing.
