Why is a manhole cover round?

Have you gotten an oddball question like this during an interview? There is no correct answer. An interviewer would ask something like this to see how you react and if your answer showed good reasoning. The wrong thing to do would be to dismiss the question as a joke and not take it seriously.

If you are interviewing in person for a sales job, the interviewer might hand you something like a pen and say, "Sell it to me." She wants to see how you think on your feet and how you present yourself and the pen.

If you do get the manhole cover question, one that seems unrelated to the job or even one you weren't expecting, pause and say, "That's a good question." That gives you a few seconds to think before answering. When you make up an answer for the manhole question, speak confidently like you are the expert! It may just get you the job. • Why is a manhole cover round?
This is not a ODDBALL question, it is a safety issue question, and a very important one at that.

  • Sorry but your answer does not make sense. If the manhole cover is smaller than the hole it will fall in the pipe!! A square manhole cover would not fall into a round hole. Sooooooo why is a manhole cover round?? And if I were applying for a sales job and someone ask me why a manhole cover is round--that has nothing to do with the job I am interviewing for. Which is the point of this article!!

  • An employer might ask an oddball question to see how you reacted. Can you think on your feet? Do you react in anger or annoyance at an off-the-wall question? Those reactions can give her an idea of how you might react on the job when under pressure or when a guest asks you something peculiar.

Not every employer does this, but some do. More commonly an employer will ask how you would handle a certain situation on the job- usually dealing with customers or with your fellow workers. Jaimie

  • You missed the point of the manhole cover. A square manhole cover can be picked up and fall into a the manhole if the cover is turned on its side and pointed in the direction of opposite corners, it will fall in. It is impossible for a round manhole cover to fall in a round circle.
