Are you getting nervous?

If you have been looking for a position for the summer but still haven't found one, don't despair. There are still plenty of positions to be had. In addition, employers often end up with last minute openings. Someone who had said they were coming doesn't show for one reason or another. Occasionally a solo or couple working on the RV road gets to a location, tries it out and then decides it's not for them.

These openings can occur all season long. For larger employers like concessionaires at national parks, for example, the turnover is pretty constant. There are openings most of the season. You may need to start in an job that isn't your first choice, but there's a good chance you can transfer as other positions open up.

How do you find these openings?

  • The daily Hotline sent out by Workamper is an excellent source of last-minute job openings. Subscribe to Workamper News at Workamper.com. Check the print magazine too.

  • Keep in touch with employers you have already applied to. Send an e-mail or give them a call shortly after the starting date and let them know you are interested and available if something opens up.

  • Contact larger employers who are more likely to have openings. You can find out the name of the concessionaire for a national park or national forest by calling the local park or forest. Amusement parks are another possibility.

  • Any popular tourist or resort area will also have employee turnover.

  • You might find an opening on Craigslist, one of the free employment newspapers in larger towns, or through classifieds online or in local papers.

So, don't give up. If you are new to Workamping and can afford it, consider volunteering at a state park for a month or two to get some experience. In the meantime, keep sending out resumes and following up. Something will come through. Jaimie Hall Bruzenak

Lakeland Workamper job fair a success!

In spite of a closure on I-4 the day before the job fair which closed I-4 coming from Orlando for two days, we had a good turnout and a successful job fair. A variety of employers gave out information and interviewed Workampers. Six seminars each day gave basic and advanced information on Workamping, the RV lifestyle, writing your Workamper resume and using the online Workamper tools. In addition to me, Alice Zyetz, Phyllis Frey and Jodi Anderson presented seminars. Alice, Phyllis and I also offered individual resume sessions. Attendees and employers all had very positive feedback.

We will be repeating the job fair in Mesa, AZ on January 29 and 30 at the Mesa Convention Center. Boondocking on the parking lot is available for a modest fee and a number of campgrounds are within a 15-30 minute drive. See Job Fairs at Workamper.com under Job Seekers.

If you are in Arizona, hope to see you there! Jaimie

Job Fairs for RVers in Lakeland, FL and Mesa, AZ

Workamper® News, Inc will produce two events with a wide range of employers who will be interviewing job seekers at the Workamper News Job Fairs, Jan. 10-11, 2008 at the Lakeland Center, Lakeland, FL, and Jan. 29-30, 2008 at the Mesa Convention Center in Mesa, AZ.

The Job Fairs will provide Workampers, persons who combine any type of full-time or part-time working with RV camping, an opportunity for face-to-face interviews with employers from across America. Thousands of great part-time and full-time Workamping jobs will be available.

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in seminar sessions on topics ranging from Workamping Basics to RV Retirement Planning to Resumé Writing. Seminars will be given by four different presenters over the two day Job Fair.

“We enjoy going to Job Fairs because it is nice to meet the employers and it is a good chance to ask questions. We like to go both days so we can visit all of the booths, have time for interviews and take in a seminar or two,” said Ted and Joan Semprini, Workampers from Altoona, IA.

Workamper employers can include private campgrounds, state and national parks, amusement facilities, hotels, monuments, motor sports, sales, etc. Exhibit spaces are being allotted on a first-come, first-served basis. Employers may reserve space by calling Workamper® News at 501-362-2637.
