FAST INTERNET ACCESS FROM YOUR RV
As promised last issue, here's some information about new technology
that allows an RVer to surf the Internet at broadband (fast) speed
no matter where an RV is parked.
For now, mobile surfing the Web or accessing email from an RV is limited
to using a cellular phone with a laptop computer. But the speeds are
slow and access spotty, especially in the wide open West where
cellular service is still unavailable outside major metropolitan areas.
But now a company named Motosat is about to introduce a service
it calls Datastorm. The system is not cheap, $4,995 initially, then
$89.95 a month. But, like most new products, the price will
likely drop significantly after awhile. The Datastorm system works
like this: You park your RV in an area with a clear view to the south,
free of trees and other obstructions, then turn on your computer,
then turn on the MotoSat controller, then run the MotoSat positioning
software. After about 4 minutes, the system will lock onto a satellite
and you will be online no matter where you are, even in the middle
of the desert. If the optional DirecTV transponder is added,
DirectTV will also work.
The download speed is about 10 times the upload speed due to the
satellite technology, but the system tester we spoke with said he
got the performance of a 56k modem in upload mode and much better
results while downloading images, music, etc. To learn more about
Datastorm, visit http://www.motosat.com
ALASKA HIGHWAY BY RV

"RV Alaska" details Bob and Judy Howen's 67-day, 6,700-mile trip on the Alaska Highway and then in Alaska itself (with a return trip via the Inland Passage by ferry). Their other videos, "Western Canada By RV" and "Eastern Canada by RV" are equally entertaining. Read more about these home videos or order at http://www.RVbookstore.com/howens.html
