FROM CHUCK WOODBURY
editor, http://www.RVtraveler.com

Dear Reader
,

Welcome to the 12th issue of the RV Traveler Newsletter,
brought to you by the websites and sponsors above. And a
special welcome to the 900 new readers since our
last issue two weeks ago.

This issue I'd like to share with you a story I wrote a few years
ago about a small radio station I discovered in the dusty, Arizona
outpost of Quartzsite. Many western RVers are familiar
with Quartzsite for its huge winter-long flea market and gem show,
when literally 100,000 RVers at a time visit the area, most
camped for free just outside town on government land. But most
do not know that the tiny outpost has its own FM radio
station. It's operated by a couple named Buck and Maude, and their
KBUX studio is in the spare bedroom of their cinder block home. Read
the fascinating story of this funky, homespun operation at
http://www.outwestnewspaper.com/radio.html

THE CARS RVers TOW BEHIND THEIR MOTORHOMES
In its February issue, Family Motor Coaching Magazine reported
the results of a member survey. Among the questions
answered were "Which vehicle do you tow behind your motorhome?"
The most popular, in order, were: Saturn (17%), Jeep (17%),
Chevrolet (13%), Ford (12%) and Honda (10%).

"HEY, GOOD BUDDY, THAT'S A 10-4"
If you've ever spent time on a CB Radio or listened to a police
scanner, you've heard a lot of "ten code" -- a shortcut language for
popular standard responses. "Ten-Four" is the most common and means
"yes," or "okay." Read about other "ten codes" used by truckers
at http://www.layover.com/infocenter/10_codes.htm

ALASKA HIGHWAY BY RV
Three new home videos provide a sneak preview of traveling north of
our border. "RV Alaska" details Bob and Judy Howen's 67-day, 6,700-mile

the Inland Passage by ferry). Their other videos, "Western Canada By RV"
and "Eastern Canada by RV" are equally entertaining. Read more about

FREEBIE CAMPING LANDS RVer IN THE HOSPITAL
Many RVers occasionally spend the night somewhere besides in an
official campground. One of the most popular overnight "freebies" is
the parking lot of a Wal-Mart store. There are almost never any
safety problems with this practice, but as the following letter
illustrates, there CAN be. We found this posting on a newsgroup
and thought it was worth passing along:

"I just wanted to let everyone know that my husband and I were
robbed at the Wal-Mart store in Myrtle Beach a few days ago. We
were told that it was Wal-Mart security at our RV door at 11 p.m. and
when my husband opened the door two men hit him with a baseball bat
several times and robbed us. My husband was in the hospital overnight
and all the police could tell us was that we should not have been in the
parking lot at that time of night with a RV. He said that an RV is an ad
that we are on vacation and that we have money. I never thought about it
but the police are correct, and to save a few bucks from staying in a
campground we almost lost our lives."

The moral to this story is to always be aware of your surroundings and
never open your door for anyone unless he or she is wearing a badge.
And, as one reader advised, "Do not turn on your interior lights when
responding to a knock. That way the outsider cannot see in. "
