QUIZ BELOW. WIN A VIDEO!
++++++++++++++++++++++++

Judging from the activity at our websites, RVers are already
getting back on the road after trying their best to come to terms
with the tragic events of Sept. 11. A survey I conducted last
week of 457 RVers revealed that 67% expect to travel in their
RVs the same as before the attacks. The remaining RVers were
evenly divided between planning to travel more or less. Meanwhile,
RV rentals have been in big demand, as some travelers take to
the road rather than to the skies.

Here in the West, many full time RVers are preparing to head
south for the winter. Many will include a stop at the 19th
annual Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show to be held
January 19th through January 27th in sunny Quartzsite, Arizona.
Quartzsite was once a lonely, dusty spot in the desert, but nowadays
it booms each winter when hundreds of thousands of RVers arrive to
peruse a collection of side-by-side flea markets and gem shows that
span more than a mile. The January RV Show (free admission) is one
of the largest such shows in the United States. For more information,
visit http://www.quartzsitervshow.com

VIEW OF MANHATTAN SKYLINE CHANGES FROM CAMPGROUND
Liberty Harbor Marina & RV Park in Jersey City, NJ has a clear
view of the lower Manhattan skyline. Photographer Loren Eyrich
visited before and after Sept. 11, capturing the startling change
of view. http://www.two-lane.com/manhattanrecovers.html

ABOUT.COM DROPS POPULAR RV SITE
About.com has laid off 20% of its staff and chopped some special
interest subject areas, among them a popular area called RV travel.

WINNEBAGO IS MOST POPULAR
For the first time in 15 years, Winnebago motorhomes have taken the
lead as America's best selling motorhomes. Fleetwood has held the top
spot for years, but has slipped in sales lately. Learn more
about Winnebago at http://www.winnebagoind.com

LAS VEGAS MONORAIL UNDERWAY
Construction started last month on a $650-million, 3.8-mile Las Vegas
Strip monorail that will link the MGM Grand at the south end of the
Strip with the Sahara at the north end of Las Vegas Boulevard with
stops in between. The project, billed as the world's first modern,
privately funded public transportation system, is being financed by
eight casinos and by contractors and investors who raised funds in
secured bonds. You should be able to take your first ride in three years.

MY LIFE ON THE ROAD
Before publishing my RV websites, I roamed the American West
for a dozen years in my "motorhome-newsroom," publishing an
"on-the-road" newspaper called Out West. The paper received a
lot of media attention, so perhaps you have heard of it. I wrote
a column in the current issue of RV Journal magazine that tells my
story. You might find it interesting:

RITZY MOTOR HOMES
So maybe you paid $75,000 or even $150,000 for a motorhome. About
ten years ago, either of these price tags would have put you in
an elite class of RVers. But no more. A recent article in USA Today
profiles some RVers who are traveling the country in rigs that
cost more than a million dollars. And, the story points out,
these folks are not retirees spending their nest eggs but
younger, affluent boomers who want the freedom RVs provide, but in
a style fit for a king.
http://www.usatoday.com/life/travel/leisure/2001/2001-04-06-rvs.htm

NO PARK WAL-MARTS
Many RVers stay the night at a Wal-Mart parking lot on occasion.
About 90% of all Wal-Marts graciously allow RVers to stay. But
some don't, most often because of a city ordinance that prohibits
the practice. To learn which Wal-Marts DO NOT permit overnight
stays, visit http://www.FreeCampgrounds.com/noparking.html

WIN A MOTORHOME FOR A WEEK
Workhorse Custom Chassis LLC is sponsoring a contest where one lucky
winner will receive a free seven-day vacation in a gas engine Class A
motorhome built on its W22 chassis. One U.S. resident age 21 or older
with a valid driver’s license will win the vacation in a drawing
on Nov. 30.

KOA HELPS SEND KIDS TO CAMP
For the 16th year, KOA Kampgrounds has once again helped send
children with cancer to camp. Within the first five months of 2001,
ten of KOA's company-owned campgrounds raised more than $50,000 for
the company's Care Camps.Funds were earned from ice cream socials,
hot dog roasts and other events. The camps, 38 all together in the
US and Canada, were created to help children with cancer enjoy
a carefree time focusing on fun, friends and activities instead
of their illness. Camps are equipped with medical supplies and
staff to make it possible for children to sleep away from home.
Since 1984, KOA has contributed more than $1.5 million to
this effort.

FASCINATING NEW SPORT PERFECT FOR RVers
A newly created sport called Geocaching combines the excitement of
a treasure hunt with the new technology of Global Positioning
Systems (GPS). The idea is to have individuals and organizations set
up caches all over the world and share the locations on the
Internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find
the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with
anything from trinkets to goods of value. All the visitor is asked
to do is to leave something in the cache if he or she takes
something already there.
The sport's website is http://www.geocaching.com

TOWING LAWS STATE BY STATE
This will come in handy if you tow a car or trailer.
http://www.towingworld.com/laws.html

ANTELOPE ISLAND IS A DIFFERENT KIND OF PLACE
Antelope Island is a mostly barren, but beautiful place, in the
middle of Utah's Great Salt Lake. It's only a short drive from
Salt Lake City, but it seems far, far away. Antelope Island State
Park has both RV and primitive campsites, and there's a visitor
center and gift shop. A herd of about 600 American Bison roams
the island as does other wildlife including deer, bobcats, coyote,
many varieties of birds and waterfowl, and a small herd of elk.
I stayed recently on Labor Day weekend, and there were no crowds.
You can learn about this fascinating place at
http://www.utah.com/places/state_parks/antelope_island.htm.
By the way, you don't have to float your RV to get there: a
causeway with a smooth two-lane road serves quite well.
