FROM CHUCK WOODBURY
editor, http://www.RVtraveler.com
Welcome to the 29th edition of the RV Traveler Newsletter, brought
to you by the websites and sponsors above and a guy named Chuck,
who has an unceasing urge to learn what's around the next corner.
A reader wrote to me recently wondering if it was wise to purchase
a used 1989 motorhome. "I have heard that RVs built before 1990
are not allowed in many RV parks," she wrote. I answered that this was
nonsense, and that the parks with such restrictions are primarily
luxury resorts that cater to RVers with big, fancy, expensive rigs.

MANY FULLTIMERS LOOKING FORWARD TO HUGE DESERT RV SHOW
RV snowbirds are marking their calendars for the 2003 RV show in snowbird
mecca Quartzsite, Arizona. This tiny desert outpost bursts at the seams
when tens of thousands of RVers swarm to it for the annual winter rock
and mineral shows and flea markets. One of the largest and most
popular venues each year is the RV show in the "Big Tent" just south of
Interstate 10 on State Highway 95. The 19th Annual Quartzsite Sports,
Vacation & RV Show runs January 18-26. More info:

you know it's operated out of a spare bedroom? Read all about KBUX-FM at

TIPS ABOUT RENTING AN RV
Many would-be RVers get their first taste of RVing in a rented RV. Here
are some tips about how to rent one from the Recreational Vehicle Industry
Association:
-- Do you want to rent an RV near your home and drive it to your
destination or fly to your vacation location and rent an RV there? Many
larger rental companies offer fly-drive packages.
-- A valid driver's license is all that's required to rent an RV for
personal use. Be sure to have yours with you. Rental companies do not
all have the same required minimum driving age, so check before you go
if you have any doubts.
-- Before you go, check to make sure your rental RV is covered under
your current car insurance policy. It may turn out that you need
additional coverage from the rental agency. More information about
renting an RV is at http://www.NewRVer.com/renting.html .

LETTER TO THE EDITOR . . .
"My husband and I just returned from San Diego where we got a parking ticket
in nearby Oceanside for taking up two spaces in a public parking lot, which will
cost us $27. This was a perfectly honest mistake on our part. It was a public
parking lot near the pier with a four-hour parking limit. Unfortunately, we did
not see the sign warning that one space was allowed per vehicle. So that means
even a car or truck with a boat or trailer can't park there. After we returned
to the motorhome (taking two spaces because it's 30 feet long) we found the
parking ticket. My husband couldn't believe it. A police officer on the next block
recommended we go to the city hall to file a complaint, which we did. Soon after
returning home, we received notice that the ticket was upheld. We feel the city of
Oceanside should provide parking for RVs if they want us to visit. As is, the only
RV parking is at the harbor which is too far to walk to the pier. Other RVers
should know this so they don't make the same mistake." -- Evalyn
FROM THE EDITOR: It's likely that Oceanside is not the only town with such a
"one-space" policy. RVers should be sure to check for signs where they park
to make sure they, too, don't end up with a ticket.
