FROM CHUCK WOODBURY
editor, http://www.RVtraveler.com

Welcome to the 38th edition of the RV Traveler Newsletter,
brought to you every Sunday by a guy named Chuck, who
feels very strongly that a roof of aluminum and/or coated with
rubber is far superior to one made of shingles.

2003 "RVer's FRIEND" DIRECTORY HOT OFF THE PRESS
The much anticipated 2003 edition of the directory RVer's Friend has
arrived at our RV Bookstore. This fabulous guidebook lists 6,500
Travel Centers (once called truck stops) in the USA and Canada, and
what services each offers RVers including dump stations, fuel (diesel,
gas, propane), Internet access, repair services, showers, and even
if it's okay to stay the night. Any RVer who spends much time on the
road should carry this guide, which is only $11.95. Read more or
order

JACK NICHOLSON, RVer?
"I'm not an RVer, but I play one in the movies." That's what actor
Jack Nicholson might be saying right about how as his newest
film, "About Schmidt," gets ready to debut. The film chronicles the
life of Warren Schmidt as he attempts to find meaning in his life after
retirement. Told with the help of a series of letters to a six-year-old
orphan he adopts for $22 a month via TV, Warren sets out in his
Winnebago Adventurer to attend the wedding of his daughter and
soon-to-be-son-in-law, an underachieving waterbed salesman.

And now, more news and information. . .

DANGER: WATCH OUT FOR DRUNK DRIVERS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
On any given day, one of 50 cars is being driven by a driver under
the influence of alcohol. The number rises to one in 20 on weeknights
and one in ten Friday and Saturday nights. That's what a California
author of a book about drunk driving says. Doug Thornburn believes
accidents could be dramatically reduced if more motorists knew the
subtle signs that a driver is drunk. Among the most common:
-- Driving straight in a turn-only lane.
-- Making obscene gestures.
-- Accelerating or braking erratically.
-- Tossing litter out the car window.
-- Tailgating, particularly while speeding and trying to get through
traffic.
-- Not yielding the right of way, including cutting in line.
-- Driving at night with the headlights off.
-- Speeding excessively or driving recklessly in inclement weather
or with a child in the car.

Should you spot a motorist engaging in such behavior, Thonrburn
suggests a multi-pronged strategy: hang back, get out of his or her
way and alert the police with your cell phone.

AC POWER LINE PROBLEMS, A MYSTIFYING MENACE
You've heard the stories; a roof top air conditioner bogs down and trips
the breaker; a television set image is suddenly reduced to a much smaller
viewing area; your neighbor plugs his coach into the campground and your
microwave oven quits in mid-cycle; reports of a lightning storm in the
next county are followed by the lights inside your coach all of a sudden
becoming very bright. The fact is, there are a myriad of electrical problems
equally available to all RVers. Collectively known as "power line problems,"
individually they create a palette of dilemmas. Learn more.

AT WHAT SPEED WILL POLICE GIVE YOU A TICKET?
Most of us believe that the police will not pull us over to issue a
speeding ticket unless we are going at least 10 miles per hour
over the speed limit. Are we kidding ourselves? Apparently not.
A Houston Chronicle computer analysis of about 350,000 speeding
tickets in the city of Houston revealed that 99 percent went to drivers
exceeding the speed limit by 10 mph or more. Only in school zones
was the speed limit more strictly enforced. The roads on which police
say they give the most tickets for speeders exceeding the limit by
20 mph or more are lower-speed freeways where the limits are
55 or 60 mph.

NEW TOWING PRODUCT SAID TO REDUCE DAMAGE TO FIFTH WHEEL RVs
A new product called the Bedsaver is said to reduce the risk of costly
damage to tow vehicles from fifth-wheel trailers that drop onto the
tailgate. The device bolts on to most brands of fifth-wheel hitches and
prevents the trailer from dropping onto the truck bed by channeling the
trailer hitch pin to a catch point. Get more information.

VOLUNTEERING WITH THE CORPS OF ENGINEERS
The Corps of Engineers is one of the Nation's largest providers of
outdoor recreation, operating more than 2,500 recreation areas at 463
projects (mostly lakes) and leasing an additional 1,800 sites to state or
local park and recreation authorities or private interests. The Corps hosts
about 360 million visits a year at its lakes, beaches and other areas, and
estimates that 25 million Americans (one in ten) visit a Corps project at
least once a year. Many RVers help the Corps by volunteering to help
with its projects, including camp hosting. Learn more.
