Beginners Guide to RVing: http://www.NewRVer.com
Free Campgrounds of the West: http://www.FreeCampgrounds.com
RV Links: http://www.RV-links.com
Dear Readers,
Welcome to the fourth issue of the RV Traveler Newsletter.
The thought struck me recently that with all that's going on in
the world and here in the States, that the motorhome parked in
my driveway provides some comfort to my family and me. It's
loaded with gasoline, water and propane and its cupboards are
stocked with non-perishable goods just in case we might need
to use it for housing because of an emergency.
It wasn't the events of September 11 that prompted us to stock up
our RV, but the earthquake several months earlier here in Seattle,
when we all rumbled and tumbled and were reminded that we are
just as vulnerable to a major shaker as our neighbors to the
south in California. Years ago, as a journalist, I was assigned
to do a story about Coalinga, Calif., which had been severely
shaken by a huge earthquake. I drove my own motorhome there to
use as my headquarters during the visit. What I witnessed was
incredible devastation houses along one block after another shaken
right off their foundations. And, very interesting to me as an RVer,
was the sight of travel trailers and motorhomes in many of the
front yards serving as temporary housing for the displaced
families.
Today, I am confident that our government is doing what it can
to prevent further acts of terrorism in our country. But, like most
Americans, I am anxious about what might happen in the months
or even years it takes to defeat the evil people who want to hurt us.
My motorhome, parked in my driveway when not transporting me
on magical travel journeys, has taken on an entirely new meaning to
my family and me as a standby home should we ever need it.

EXPECT DELAYS AT OUR BORDERS
Before September 11th, there were few holdups for American
vacationers crossing the borders of Canada or Mexico. In the aftermath
of the terrorist attacks on the United States, security at North America's
301 border crossings has tightened to keep out terrorists. With
350,000 vehicles and millions of passengers entering the United States
every day, imposing the new security measures has stretched
out the inspection time of each vehicle. By all accounts, travelers
are finding it harder and slower to get across the border. In Canada,
officials say traffic at some border crossings has dropped 50 percent
and, as a result, tourism has been badly battered.
LONG MOTORHOMES NOW OKAY ON CALIFORNIA ROADS
California AB 67 passed the state legislature on Oct. 12. So, once again,
45-foot motorhomes are now legal in the state. Read the fine print at

RVers BENEFITING FROM LOWER GAS PRICES
Nationwide, AAA reports that gas prices have dropped to $1.30 a gallon,
providing motorists with a much-needed break at the gasoline pumps.
The prices are the lowest since January of 2000, due mainly to a dramatic
drop in crude oil prices since mid-September.
