Editor's corner
By Chuck Woodbury

Nevermind what I wrote last week about hitting the road, roaming like a gypsy. Yes, I am now on the road. But I have no dog along and there's no leisurely roaming (yet). Last weekend, shortly after this newsletter was posted, I learned that finally, after nearly two years, my late-parents' home in Grass Valley, California has sold. So, on Thursday, my daughter and I left Edmonds (Wash.) in my motorhome on the two-day drive to the small Sierra foothills community near Sacramento.

The carefree RV road trip I had planned is on hold while I clear out the house and tend to legal matters. Emily will be with me until Sunday evening when she will fly back to Edmonds. She wanted one last look at the house -- filled with many wonderful memories of "Grandma and Grandpa." And I think she was also looking for an excuse to get away in the RV, if only for a couple of days.

I am thrilled to be rid of the responsibility (as is my sister) of being an absentee homeowner. But I am also sad to say good bye to the home where I spent my late teen years, and then visited often in the decades since. Going "home" lately has been bittersweet -- happy to be in the familiar place, but emotionally stressful to be there without my parents. Soon, with the house gone, a chapter in my life ends.

I hope you enjoy this issue.

NEW IMPROVED RVtravel FORUM:
We have moved our RV Travel Forum to a new home on the Internet. The old one was under constant attack by spammers. Our administrator Adrienne Kristine was spending a good part of each day battling these slimy creatures. The thousands of existing postings will remain, but no new ones will be permitted. The new forum is at RVtravelForum.com. Members of the old forum will need to re-register (sorry, but there was no other way), which is a simple process. Will you please join in? I'm confident the new forum will build fast, making it a valuable resource in a very short time. Visit the new forum. Read the archives in the old one.

Different view of stupid RVer trick
oWe showed you a home video version of this daredevil attempt before, but this short segment from a TV show explains more about what happened when an RVer in an old motorhome tried to jump the crest of a hill. The outcome doesn't appear too bad except for the damage to the rig. But, as the announcer explains, the damage to the driver was far worse. Watch the two-minute video.

Maxxair's back -- with more lid stability
A powered Maxxair roof vent system moves a high volume of air through your rig without chewing up a lot of battery power. One problem with the vents is that they can flip in high winds or if a vent is open while rolling down the highway. Well, a new generation of vent has arrived that takes care of this problem. RVs, rubber roofs. . . and you
Few innovations in the RV industry can boast of steady interest over an extended period of time. But along with other leading-edge design concepts such as basement model floor plans and slide-out rooms, the advent of EPDM rubber roofing has generated a lot of interest and many questions regarding its wear, its care and its benefits. Be careful about weight when choosing an RV tow vehicle
If you already own a tow vehicle, you need to find a trailer that is within the weight range of its tow limits. It can be extremely frustrating to find the perfect travel trailer or fifth wheel and then be told that your vehicle can't tow it. It can be worse if a sales person at a disreputable RV dealer wrongly informs you that you can tow it! This happens every day, and this is why you need to be armed with the right information before you buy. Read more.

Don't mess with carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide gas is invisible, odorless and deadly. It's produced when any fuel is burned. This includes gasoline, propane, natural gas, wood and coal. It is extremely serious when combustion by-products are not vented outside. Carbon monoxide is the number one cause of poisoning deaths in the United States each year. Here is what you can do to prevent the danger of carbon monoxide in your RV.

Hooking up RV dinghy is easy with this Blue Ox system
oThis is an excellent demonstration of how to hook up a Blue Ox aluminum towing system to a vehicle being pulled four-wheels down by a motorhome. It's very impressive how fast and easy it is to hook up with this Blue Ox product, and then unhook at the campground. A tow dolly is not required, so there is no extra equipment taking up space at the campsite. Watch the video.

Full-timer Tips
Full-time fear factors
By Russ De Maris
Some folks allow fears of danger to hold them back from taking up the full-time lifestyle. Their "boogyman" may be that someone will break in and harm them while living in their RV. But think about it: How likely is it that someone could break into your RV without you being aware of it, when compared to a house "on a foundation?" The size and construction of a stick-built home makes it a lot more desirable to a burglar. RVs, on the other hand, are harder to break into by their very design. And since many RVers have the reputation of carrying weapons, RVs are not particularly desirable targets. A would-be thief doesn't have a clue whether you're armed to the teeth or not. A good rule is to exercise good judgement. If a situation looks "kinky" or you're just not comfortable, move along. Russ De Maris is a contributor to FulltimeRVer.com.

Boondocking Tip
By Bob Difley
To conserve power use hand operated devices rather than electrical ones. Use a broom instead of vacuum cleaner or a spoon over an electric blender. Hand-knead bread instead of using an electric bread maker. Also: Wake with the sun and go to bed with the sunset to save on electric lights that deplete batteries. Read instead of watching TV, keep your porch light off, and use a flashlight at night instead of 12-volt night lights. Bob Difley is the author of the eBook Boondocking: Finding the Perfect Campsite on America's Public Lands.

Trivia
Some historians believe that Lyman Gilmore, Jr., of Grass Valley, Calif., flew a powered aircraft before the Wright Brothers. Gilmore claimed he flew a self-built steam-powered airplane on May 15, 1902. But proof of his accomplishment was lost in a 1935 hangar fire. Gilmore was known as an eccentric who vowed to never cut his hair or beard and who wore a trench coat even in the summer heat. On March 15, 1907, he opened the first-ever commercial airport, now the site of Lyman Gilmore elementary school in Grass Valley.

Random RV Thought
It's tempting to let your kids have the run of a motorhome while you are driving down the highway. But if the rig were to stop very fast, the children could be thrown violently. So make sure children (and adults, too) are buckled up at all times except when making a quick shift to a new seat.

Chuck Woodbury has explored America by RV for nearly three decades. In the '90s he published a quirky travel newspaper about his adventures and was an "on the road" writer for the New York Times Syndicate. Nowadays, he lives near Seattle where he drinks massive amounts of coffee and travels often in his motorhome and sometimes by plane when vast expanses of saltwater would turn his RV into a leaky submarine. He is the host of the Better Business Bureau DVD "Buying a Recreational Vehicle," the definitive guide to purchasing an RV the right way.

Everything in this newsletter is true to the best of our knowledge. But we occasionally get something wrong. We're just human! So don't go spending $10,000 on something we said was good simply because we said so, or fixing something like we suggested (check with your own technician first). Maybe we made a mistake. So be sure to check things out. At RVbookstore.com we strive for excellence in all we do and that's the honest truth (as opposed to the dishonest truth). Our customers receive really, really fast service. We move so fast in sending out a customer's order that sometimes we pass through the sound barrier, which really upsets our neighbors. Our motto is "You need it so we speed it," and no truer words were ever spoken!
