By Chuck Woodbury The new big thing in RVs is an outdoor kitchen. That's what the
Edmonton Journal reported after visiting an RV show where
several were displayed. "Just open a panel and there's a sink,
refrigerator, cooktop or grill, cabinets, and maybe a TV to keep you
entertained while you make a meal in the great outdoors," the newspaper
wrote.
Now, let me tell you right off that I think that such a kitchen is right up there with the stupidest RV inventions of all
time. And, in my opinion, if a cook needs a TV to avoid boredom in the great outdoors then he or she should bloody well just stay inside.
Dane Found, the president and CEO of
Pacific Coachworks, which offers outdoor kitchens in ten RV models, told
the newspaper that most RVers want to spend as much time as possible
outside and are already cooking outdoors, and they don't necessarily
like to make countless trips in and out of the RV to get water, dishes
and food.
This is what I believe is wrong with the outdoor kitchen concept: First,
the extra kitchen adds a bunch of weight to an RV, which lowers gas
mileage. Plus, two stoves, two refrigerators, two sets of cabinets . . . well
that's not only extra weight but extra dollars to the price tag of the RV.
With this setup, if you want to cook in both inside and outside kitchens then you better have a duplicate set of pots and pans, dishes and basic food items. Otherwise, you will constantly be running back and forth. So, plan to double up on your provisions -- two bottles of
ketchup, two heads of lettuce, two sets of salad dressings, duplicate seasonings, two butters, two containers of milk . . vegetable oil, bread, salt and pepper. . . the
list goes on. So, when you are supermarket shopping, the new rule will be "buy two when (in the old days) one would do."
And heaven forbid it should rain for a week when
you would need to transfer perishables from the outside kitchen to the indoor kitchen. That would be a whole buncha fun in a rainstorm.
So what do you think of the outdoor kitchen? Is it a
brilliant idea? Or is it a stupid idea that will
come and go faster than Jay Leno in prime time? Please answer a one-question survey. I will be curious to see how you feel. Maybe I am missing something and am way off base.
I AM
STILL IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
in the small foothill gold rush era mining town of Grass Valley. I'm here to hopefully sign the papers on the sale of my
late parents' home. Nevada City is next door, making it a twin city of Grass Valley. I lived in Grass Valley as a teenager and then in Nevada City for a half dozen years in the 1990s. The other day I walked
around Nevada City (population 2,800) with my daughter, taking a little
video along the way. Watch my one minute highlight reel (to the right)
of this beautiful Mother Lode community.
Note: I will be at the Sacramento RV Show this coming week -- I'm not sure of the exact day. But if you see me, please say hi. VOLUNTARY

Want your holding tanks to be squeaky clean?
Some RVers like having a "Mr. Clean Approved" holding tank. It drives them crazy to have something aboard that isn't. . . well. . . sanitary. But there is one thing you should consider before you stick your garden hose in a place where you wouldn't want to stick your lips: Back flow. Read more.

Boondocking Tip By Russ and Tina De Maris
Precooked Pleasures
If you'll be boondocking for a few days away from home, there's no need to give up nice meals nor spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Precook some of your favorite dishes, then pack them up in aluminum foil containers or aluminum pouches. Popped in the freezer, they'll be ready for you to re-heat in your range or even outside on the gas grill. The beauty is, you won't have a lot of washing up to do afterwards -- just toss the containers in the trash. Surprisingly, pasta dishes work quite well on the re-heat cycle. To determine appropriate amounts, when you cook up your meals, use a standard serving plate. Place the amount you'd serve at a meal on the plate, then transfer to your freezing containers. 2010
