FROM CHUCK WOODBURY
editor, http://www.RVtraveler.com

Welcome to Issue 42 of the RV Traveler Newsletter, the
world's largest e-publication about the greatest recreational
lifestyle. Did you know that if every reader of this newsletter
stood in a line single file, the line would stretch 15 miles?

FREE OVERNIGHT PARKING THREATENED
The following information comes from the Escapees, a group that
perhaps more than any other looks after the concerns of RVers.
The following "news alert" is critically important to all of us, as it
concerns legislation that could ultimately lead to outlawing free
overnight RV parking in public parking lots, even when the owner of
the parking lot wished to allow it.

"A bill (SB171) has been introduced into the Montana Senate to stop
overnight RV parking on any public parking lot in the state.
If passed, the bill would severely limit RV parking outside of
established and licensed campgrounds. The bill title reads in part: 'An
act providing that parcels of land principally used as parking lots must
be licensed as a campground in order to allow overnight camping.'"

If passed, RVers would have to break the law if they stayed outside an
official Montana campground. And, the fact is, many RVers who stay in
parking lots do so only when they are too tired to safely continue
driving to the next RV park. The passage of this bill could ultimately force
law-abiding RVers to continue driving even when they felt they were
putting themselves and others at danger. The state of Montana, too, will
likely receive a huge amount of bad publicity and will ultimately lose
significant tourist revenue from RVers.

Read more about the bill and learn how to voice your objections.

BILL WOULD PRIVATIZE WASHINGTON STATE REST AREAS
Legislation introduced in Washington state this month seeks to privatize
rest areas to free up state transportation revenue and increase
travelers’ benefits. The bill asks President Bush to grant a federal waiver
permitting private or nonprofit entities to operate rest areas in the state.

RV LIVING TIPS: USING A SHOWER FOR STORAGE
This is just one of many tips from RVers at
http://www.gocampingamerica.com/travelerstips.html
"While there really isn't any wasted space in recreational
vehicles, sometimes you find you need more room. I found
the shower stall area, while not being used most of the time,
a perfect place to store items in a plastic see thru storage
cart with drawers. I put our paper plates, napkins, cups and
cutlery, salt/pepper or whatever is needed for meals in it. When
set up at campsite we just set the storage cart on a picnic table
so we don't have to go in and out of the trailer when setting up for
meals. Its waterproof and very handy."

DID YOU KNOW?
The voice in the new TV commercials promoting RVing is that of actor
Tom Selleck, who starred in the popular 1980s' TV series "Magnum P.I."
If Selleck sounds convincing on the ads it could be because he loves
the RV lifestyle: the actor has owned two Vogue motorhomes.

FIND A POST OFFICE
Anyone who travels by RV needs to stop at a post office now and
then. Sometimes it's just to buy stamps, but other times it's
to pick up general delivery mail or to mail a package. Sometimes,
though, finding a post office isn't easy. For those RVers lucky
enough to have onboard Internet access, it's real easy: Just click
here
and then point the RV in the right direction.

RV TECH TIP. By Mark Polk
What is LP gas? LP stands for liquefied petroleum, or liquid propane.
LP gas is used in RVs because it is portable, efficient and safe when
handled properly. It gets its name because when it is manufactured it
is compressed and stored under pressure, which causes it to liquefy.
LP gas is odorless, colorless and tasteless. To assist you in detecting
a gas leak, an odorant is added when the gas is manufactured. Most
people describe the smell as similar to rotten eggs. Regardless of the
type of cylinder or tank the LP gas is stored in, a tank can only be filled
to 80 percent of its capacity to allow for expansion when the
temperature around the container rises.
Mark Polk is the producer of the video series RV Education 101.
