Big Savings on Internet Specials at Camping World. Editor's corner With Chuck Woodbury
I first published this five years ago. Most of you were not readers of this newsletter then, so I hope you enjoy it this time around.
Visiting a cemetery is like taking a trip back in time. . .
When I'm on the road with time to spare, I love to stop at rural cemeteries. It's not morbid at all. There is so much history in a cemetery that visiting one is like taking a trip back in time.
Anyone who has any detective in them can find clues about the people buried there. I know that someday I will occupy such a place. Perhaps someone like me will stop by, say hi, and spend a few minutes trying to figure who I was. I love that thought.
When I am exploring a cemetery, reading headstones and trying to put pieces of lives together, I know that I am simply visiting with people who traveled through time before me. We all take our turns. My time is now. Lucky me.
In the very rural cemeteries of the West, you find many childrens' graves. And the adults, well. . . they didn't live as long as we do. Life was hard and uncertain. A decade ago in a tiny, nearly forgotten California gold rush cemetery, I stumbled upon a family plot -- father, mother and five daughters -- the Gaugh family. The oldest daughter lived to 18. Her sisters died younger. The husband survived his wife and all the children by more than a decade.
I have never forgotten the Gaughs. What grief the father must have endured as the sole survivor of his family. Oh my goodness, I cannot even imagine! Yet I try. I try because I want to honor him, his wife and his precious girls. But I also want to remind myself that I am alive now and must appreciate my life -- and live it to its fullest. I once read a quote that went, "Live each day as if it were a work of art." What splendid advice! Visiting a cemetery pulls me out of a stupor in which I forget to appreciate that "I am one lucky guy to be alive." Such a jolting thought helps me go forward with energy and purpose, and to appreciate every day, every experience and every person I meet.
MY DAYS TRAVELING BY RV are among my best. I see new places. I meet new people. I fill my head with new experiences that morph into memories. And I am richer for it. I am happy to live in a time where I can do something like this.
Stop at the next cemetery you come upon. Spend time reading the headstones. Sit on a bench. Think. Feel privileged to be above ground and not below. And, corny as it sounds, say hi to the residents. Learn what you can about them and about yourself, too.

How to lubricate RV and other locks

This does not qualify for a top ranking in Stupid RVer Tricks, but it's right up there in the "Why?" category! Watch the video. Need shore power when a hookup isn't handy? Here's a way.
What do you do when you need shore power but there's no electric hookup handy? Fire up the generator? Yes, that's an option. But there's another, simpler way -- use an inverter. These devices, the smallest of which cost $25 or less, convert 12-volt RV battery power into "shore power," that many other shore power-loving devices can work with. Read more.

Triple axle electric brake problem Dear Gary,
I have an F-350 pickup pulling a Newmar Mountainaire fifth-wheel. I have been using a Jordan brake controller. The RV has three axles with six brakes. Until recently the RV braking has worked flawlessly. Last week while applying the brakes the amperage readings on the Jordan display, jumped up to 30-plus amps. Normally the readings are between 9.5 to 12-amps. On one of the next brake applications the controller emitted a puff of smoke and quit functioning. Upon inspection I find that along with the blown brake controller, the Ford under-hood fuse box, which controls the trailer charging circuit was also blown. Can you shed any light on this problem? --Rocky, (Livingston, TX)

QUESTION: Is emptying an RV's holding tank messy work? ANSWER: No, not normally. Both the black tank (toilet) and gray water tanks (sink, shower) can be emptied easily at any dump station (found at campgrounds, rest stops, etc.). It's a simple, straightforward process that typically involves no contact with the tank contents. Still, most RVers wear gloves when performing the chore: hoses and areas around dump stations are certainly far from germ-free. Be sure to dump the black tank first, then flush the hose by dumping the gray water. From the ABCs of RVing. Search

Boondocking Tip Smelly black water tank?
Sometimes you get a particularly bad batch of black water. Stepping into the coach after motoring down the road may practically "blow your head off." Until you can resolve the problem by dumping the tank or discovering the cause of the big stink, try this cover up: Encase your RV toilet in a large plastic garbage bag before pulling up stakes. At times strange vacuum effects while traveling can pull black water smells up through the toilet. Covering the "pot" with a big bag reduces the effect and keeps smells at bay. Learn

Try to avoid using extension cords at campgrounds
If at all possible try to avoid using an extension cord when making electrical connections at the campground. The gauges of the wire used in standard household extension cords are not suitable for RV electrical hookups. Eventually you will be put in a situation where you will need to use an extension cord. It is a good idea to purchase an RV extension cord that is compatible to the electrical system of your RV and have it on hand. If you do purchase an extension cord somewhere else, it should be at least 10-gauge wires. Learn

They are good places to stretch one's legs, walk the dog, or to prepare a grilled cheese sandwich for dining at a picnic table. Sometimes a nap is in order, and they can be especially satisfying on a warm, lazy day. Some rest areas are simply parking lots with a restroom. Others are elaborate with a full-blown restaurant, store and gas station. Rest areas in National Forests and along rural highways are often in beautiful settings with trails to walk for exercise, where the aroma of the air can be as captivating as the scenery (sagebrush in the desert or pine in the mountains). Of course, some rest areas are noisy and smell of diesel exhaust, which is further evidence that in life we win some and we lose some. NEW ARRIVALS AT RVbookstore.com
