Editor's corner
With Chuck Woodbury

The results from one of our reader surveys last week were shocking (wording intentional). We asked you if you had ever been shocked by your RV.

I would have guessed that perhaps five percent of you would have answered yes. So when the results showed that more than 21 percent of you had been shocked it was a huge eye-opener.

There are many ways an RVer can get shocked -- bad wiring at a campsite pedestal, improper wiring in an RV, an improperly wired extension cord, etc. The fact is, you could kill yourself if conditions were right. So, to provide what I believe is an important public service, RVtravel.com is teaming with the nationally-recognized HOW-TO Workshops and its chief instructor Mike Sokol, a technology instructor with 40 years experience in the professional sound industry. Together, we will bring you an electrical safety program called the "No Shock Zone" -- a series of online articles and training videos posted here at RVtravel.com and then afterward at the
No Shock Zone blog. Learn more about the program and our plans.

ON A LIGHTER NOTE, earlier this week my friend Margaret Schuler sent me this photo she snapped through her car's windshield at the Badlands of South Dakota. As you can see, the weather was less than perfect. I had to laugh: how many times have you planned a trip, driven a long way to get there, and then been greeted with crummy weather? I thought this photo pretty much summed up such an experience. Thankfully, Margaret reported that shortly after she snapped the photo, blue skies and sunshine appeared along with a spectacular rainbow.

WHEN NEXT WEEKEND'S NEWSLETTER APPEARS I will be exploring the east side of California's Sierra Nevada mountains on a five-day photo expedition with my daughter to Virginia City, Mono Lake and the ghost town of Bodie. Two weeks later, we'll set off cross country in my motorhome to New York, where I'll drop off Emily at college. After that, I'll explore the USA for about two more months (and will write all about it in this newsletter and my blog).

Keep up with me on my upcoming trips. I'll be posting at least once a day (likely more) at Twitter. Follow me there.

Gambling, RVing & Golfing
This new guide is almost like several books in one -- a directory for RVers of RV parks and campgrounds near or at casinos (and poker rooms) and golf courses. It's thick -- a whopping 454 pages. Exits from Interstates are noted to make it easy to find your destination. Learn more or order

RV length policies at National Park campgrounds
Last week, blogger Bob Difley discussed what published "maximum RV lengths" in federal campgrounds really meant. Well, a lot of you commented (sometimes disagreed) on Bob's conclusions, so this week he tries to clarify the National Park system's policy. Read what he learned.

Okay. This is weird -- an RV for dead persons!
What do you think of this Airstream motorhome? We're not sure where this photo originated, or whether it's real or the product of some good ol' Photoshop manipulation (our best guess the pic is real). What do you think?

What's the best dog for RVing?
Many RVers bring a pooch along on their RV trips. If you're thinking about adding one along to your traveling household, maybe this advice from Joe and Vicki Kieva might help you decide which pet to select. If you already have a dog, maybe you'll learn something as well.

Solar roadways: the future?
oAs the price of asphalt climbs (dramatically) because it's petroleum based, other ways to build roads become appealing. Here is what sounds like a radical solution -- building roads that generate electricity through solar power -- yet when you watch the video, it seems to make sense.

Don't let carbon monoxide make you a statistic
Does your RV have a carbon monoxide detector? It should. And when the battery on the device goes dead, you should pop in another one, right? Well, it may not be that simple as Russ De Maris explains in a post at RVtechTips.com.

Search for an RV park or campground

Installing RV solar power is not always just about the money
Some RVers question whether it's worth it to install a solar power system, which can be an expensive proposition. But sometimes it's not about the money but about the convenience. Read more.

What toilet paper is best for your RV?
So what's best -- regular TP you buy at the supermarket or a special brand made especially for RVs? Joe and Vicki Kieva offer some advice, and tell you about the RV "toilet paper test."

o. . . and speaking of toilet paper, here's a short video tip from Adrienne Kristine about how to keep your toilet paper roll from unraveling as you drive down the road.

RVs recalled because of problems with RV exit windows
They're called "egress windows," and they're in your RV to help you make a quick exit in case of an emergency. July has seen a rash of incidents for RVs with egress window issues. Either the windows are sticking or the company simply didn't install them right to start with. Here's a roundup of affected RVs from the National Highway Safety Administration.

RV Short Stop
Colonel Sanders Country
Corbin, Kentucky
If you're traveling through eastern Kentucky, visit Corbin, where Kentucky Fried Chicken originated. Corbin's most famous citizen, Harland Sanders, had humble beginnings as a farm hand, streetcar conductor, ferry operator, railroad fireman and insurance salesman. His first "restaurant" was a lunch table in the back of his service station, but his fried chicken, with its secret combination of herbs and spices, was a hit. The new establishment that the Colonel built in 1939 is now the Harland Sanders Cafe and Museum. Have a chicken dinner and learn how the Sanders' empire began. Other attractions in southeast Kentucky include Daniel Boone National Forest, Cumberland Falls State Park, Lake Cumberland and Laurel River Lake. Corbin is just off I-75 south of Lexington.

ABCs of RVing:
For absolute beginners and RV novices only.

QUESTION: I've heard you can stay for free in campgrounds if you sign up as a host. How does it work? ANSWER: Camp hosting is popular and getting more popular. Basically, you find an area of the country where you would like to stay and then search to see where positions are available. Most are in state parks, national forests and other public facilities, although there are positions in private RV parks as well. You will usually be required to make at least a two-month commitment. In exchange for some work -- maintaining campsites, answering campers' questions, collecting fees and sometimes even cleaning restrooms -- you will get a free campsite, usually with full hookups even when the other campsites do not. In some cases you may receive a stipend. An excellent source of information about available positions is Workamper NewsFrom the ABCs of RVing.

Quick RV Tip

Help keep dump stations open by being a good RVer
Many of the free dump stations available to RVers are closing because of chemicals that are harmful to septic systems and because RVers are abusing these dump stations. If we want to have access to these dump stations, it is absolutely essential that we use septic-safe chemicals (no formaldehyde), and that we clean up after ourselves and do not abuse dump stations. One golden rule for RV holding tanks is to never dump the black water tank until it's at least two-thirds full. You want the tank nearly full so that the weight and gravity will force the contents of the tank to drain properly. Another golden rule is to never leave the black tank valve open at the campground and expect the toilet to drain or flush like the toilet in your home. It won't work.
--Mark Polk

Roadside History
The Loneliest Road in America
About 23 years ago, U.S. 50 through Nevada was named "The Loneliest Road in America," by Life Magazine. Shortly thereafter, the state of Nevada decided to capitalize on the claim to fame by promoting the road, as it still does today. There are a handful of small towns along the route with main streets that haven't changed much through the years. Along the way, old Pony Express stations are preserved behind chain link fences. It's wide open space, with long, straight stretches of road and several mountain passes studded with pinion pines. RVers headed east or west through Nevada will find U.S. 50 an easy, mostly two-lane drive with many campgrounds along the way including at little known Great Basin National Park.

piuFree and cheap
camping in your RV
There are still many places to stay overnight in an RV for free, or nearly free. At FreeCampgrounds.com you'll find more than 2,000 such places, listed by state, city and searchable, too.Learn where to camp for free or for less than $10.

Fulltimer Tips
All RV insurance is not created equal
Some RVers rely on their auto insurance company for RV coverage. It can leave a gap. For example, if your rig were totaled in an accident or fire, would your "home" be replaced, or would the company cut a check for the cash value of the rig. While you might be able to find another rig for the price, it'll still be an old rig with its own set of foibles. Also, consider the contents coverage. If all your clothes and personal possessions were lost, your typical auto policy won't replace your losses. If someone visiting were to slip, fall, and break their whatchamacallit, and then sue you, and you don't have the equivalent of a "homeowner's policy," you may be stuck paying damages. It's better to be prepared. If you're a member of an RV club, you may find a benefit of club membership is a price break on RV insurance. Nevertheless, shop around.  Learn more about full-time RVing at FulltimeRVer.com.

Boondocking

Casinos make good overnight stops
RVers looking for a place to boondock soon discover there aren't many public parking lots that allow free overnight parking. Forget about shopping centers or interstate rest areas. . .you're apt to get a middle-of-the-night knock on the door asking you to move. Even many Wal-Marts post "No Overnight Parking" signs. Some truck stops are okay, but they're noisy. Casinos, on the other hand, are hospitable to RVers. They know they might get additional business. Most casinos won't turn you away, but it's important to contact security to verify that you can stay overnight and to find out where to park.

Tech Tips from Mark Polk

Things to check when towing a dinghy
When you are towing a vehicle behind your motorhome try to get in the habit of making the following checks each time you stop. Check the tow bar, base-plate, safety cables and light plug to make sure everything is properly attached. Check the tires of the towed vehicle to make sure they are not too hot or losing air. If you are using a dolly or trailer, check the wheels to make sure they are not hot to the touch. If the wheels are hot, it may indicate a brake or bearing problem. Check all of the lights everyday before towing. Read more.

About the RVtravel.com editor
Chuck Woodbury has explored America by RV for nearly three decades. In the '90s he published a quirky travel newspaper about his adventures and was an "on the road" writer for the New York Times Syndicate. Nowadays, he lives near Seattle where he drinks massive amounts of coffee and travels often in his motorhome and sometimes by plane when vast expanses of saltwater would turn his RV into a leaky submarine. He is the host of the Better Business Bureau DVD "Buying a Recreational Vehicle," the definitive guide to purchasing an RV the right way.

Everything in this newsletter is true to the best of our knowledge. But we occasionally get something wrong. We're just human! So don't go spending $10,000 on something we said was good simply because we said so, or fixing something according to what we suggested (check with your own technician first). Maybe we made a mistake. So be sure to check things out. At RVbookstore.com we strive for excellence in all we do. Our customers receive super fast service. Our motto is "You need it so we speed it," and no truer words were ever spoken!
