FROM CHUCK WOODBURY
editor, http://www.RVtraveler.com

Welcome to Issue 47 of the RV Traveler Newsletter, published
this week from the Cal Expo RV Park, just a two minute walk
from the northern bank of the American River in Sacramento, Calif.
A few dozen miles upstream, in 1848, James Marshall discovered a
nugget of gold, igniting the California Gold Rush.

The RV park here on the California State Fairgrounds is a
handy place to stay while in California's capital city, and a
full hookup site is a reasonable $20 a night. The 23-mile Jedediah
Smith Memorial Bicycle Trail passes alongside the RV park, and
RVers with bicycles can ride the trail up and downstream through
one of America's largest urban parks. To the west, Old Sacramento
and its showpiece California State Railroad Museum is only six miles
away. The paved bike trail leads east to quaint Folsom with its historic
downtown. Folsom Lake is just a few miles beyond.

I took several days to drive here from Seattle on I-5, poking along
in the right hand lane at 55 mph. With gas prices so high I figured that
slowing down would improve my mileage and stretch my gas dollars,
which it did, and dramatically.

I plan to stay in Sacramento a few more days and then begin to
move south. I'll have a report of my progress in next week's issue.

Military RV, Camping and Outdoor Recreation Directory." This

WORKHORSE DIESEL: A NEW BREED

chassis two years ago. Now the company has introduced a new air brake
diesel chassis which will become the foundation for many new
motorhomes to come. Read more or visit the Workhorse website.

KEY WEST RVers MOVE FROM PARKING LOTS TO NEIGHBORHOODS
Since Key West, Florida, police cracked down on RVs spending nights
in shopping center parking lots and at beaches, RVers have been
parking overnight in the streets of Key West neighborhoods. This
violation is more difficult for Key West police to enforce because
the RVs are spread out around the city.

FREE RIDE IS OVER FOR UTAH SENIORS IN STATE PARKS
Citizens of Utah who are 62 and older will now have to pay
admission to get into state parks, according to a recent bill approved
by a Utah legislative committee. The extra fees will help state parks
fund operations hard-hit by budget cuts last year, said Rep. Bradley
Johnson, R-Aurora, sponsor of the bill to the Salt Lake Tribune.
Deena Loyola, public information officer for the Utah Division of Parks
and Recreation, said they recently decided to approve this bill even
though it wasn't something they wanted to do.

FUEL TAX HIKE FOR TEXAS?
Texas lawmakers are expected to consider a measure in the House and
Senate to push fuel prices higher to help pay for badly needed highway
projects, The Dallas Morning News reported recently. The proposal
calls for increasing the state's 20-cent-per-gallon fuel tax by 2 cents
a gallon every year for the next 10 years, the newspaper reported. The
revenue would go toward building new roads and maintaining old ones.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE LEAVING ON AN RV TRIP
Here's an excellent article about what to check and inspect before
setting off on an RV trip. You may already know most of this, but
you're likely to pick up a valuable tip or two.

DID YOU KNOW?
Today's typical RV owner is 49 years old, married, with an annual
household income of $56,000 –- higher than the median for all
households according to a University of Michigan study. RV owners
are likely to own their homes and spend their disposable income on
traveling — an average of 4,500 miles and 28-35 days annually,
according a Recreation Vehicle Industry Association survey.

TRAILER LIFE MAGAZINE. ONE YEAR $16.00. SAVE 67%
If you only subscribe to one RV magazine, this should be it!

RV SALVAGE SUPPLIERS
Searching for a part for your RV that you won't likely find at an RV
parts store? Or looking to buy used and save money? Perhaps an RV
salvage supply is the answer. See a long of such places.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A FULL TIME RVer?
About six month ago, we told you about Steven Fletcher's Full
Timers Aptitude Test
. So many readers took (and enjoyed) it
that we decided to remind you about it again. See if you have what
it takes to be a fulltimer. The test takes only a few minutes and
you'll get your score a few seconds after that.

RANDOM RV THOUGHT
From reader Mike Dodson: "After our first major RV trip south
during the Christmas/New Year holidays, my wife made a comment
that sold our friends on RVing so much they now have a fifth wheel.
She told them our new unit was like staying in a wonderful four-star
hotel, but with food anytime day or night, and your own bedding."
