Editor's corner
With Chuck Woodbury

I am headed to Iceland late this summer. For one glorious week I will tour the island in a rented RV, following the country's 831-mile ring road, Highway 1. I will be wrapping up a two week trip in England before flying to Reykjavik to pick up my campervan.

Iceland covers 39,768 square miles -- about the same as Kentucky. There are about 7,500 miles of roads, two thirds of which are dirt or gravel. The two-lane ring road is almost entirely paved. About 220,000 of the country's 320,000 people live in the capital of Reykjavik, leaving very few people elsewhere. But lucky for travelers with RVs, there are many campgrounds: the Icelandic people, it seems, love to camp.

Rather than go into a lot of detail here, you can click to a website I have set up about my trip and about RVing in Iceland in general. You can see a map of my route, watch a video of the small RV I'll be traveling with and learn much more about this little known country and RVing destination.

I will update RViceland.com in the months ahead. During my trip I will post daily along with short videos. A good way to keep up with me once I'm there will be at the RVtravel.com Facebook page. With any luck I will be able to do a live webcast.

Speaking of live webcasts. . .
I will host one next Saturday, May 21 at 9 a.m. (Pacific). Please join me: I'll talk more about my trip to Iceland and will show some photos. The link to the webcast will be in next week's issue of this newsletter. If you sign up at ustream.tv first, we can then chat during the webcast.

Top photo credit: Martin de Lusenet on Flickr. Small photo: Small Iceland campground, this one located on a farm. Many farmers allow camping on their land.

New newsletter: The first edition of our new Great RV Accessories newsletter is coming next Wednesday, May 18. Learn about terrific RV-related gizmos, gadgets, etc. You can sign up for an email alert at the RVtravel.com main newsletter signup page. Once there, just enter your email address, then click the submit button. You will then receive an email where you can add an alert for the new newsletter.

A lot of response to my idea of $10 campsites last week
I heard from many of you after I suggested in last week's issue that RV parks offer $10 bare bones campsites aimed specifically at RVers who need a place to stay for one night of sleep. I suggested that perhaps if the RV parks would do it they would attract some RVers who refuse to pay $30 or $40 a night just to sleep who instead opt for a Wal-Mart parking lot. You can read what I wrote here. If this idea were to gain momentum, I would be happy to create and publicize an online directory of RV parks that offered such a service. I, for one, would stop often at these campgrounds.
I will write more about this in the next couple of weeks.

Be sure to keep up with RVtravel.com and me, too, at Facebook. Be my friend on my personal page or "Like Us" on our RVtravel.com business site.

California announces

It's now official, 70 of California's state parks will begin reducing services by summer and shutting their doors in September. The last of the parks will be locked up by July 2012. When is the best time
to measure tire pressure?

Is it best to measure when tires are cold? Okay, what exactly does "cold" mean? And did you know that temperature will affect the pressure in your tires? Can you guess how much the pressure in your tires will change with a 10 degree change in the air temperature? Learn the answer to these questions here.

"How I exceeded my 5 Gigabite limit with Verizon!"
That's what Geeks On Tour blogger Chris Guld writes in a posting in our Digital RVer blog. Even though going over the monthly plan limit is not as costly today as it used to be (it was crazy expensive!), it's still best to avoid overages, because it could still cost you. Read more.

Coping with RV circuit breaker problems
Like home appliances, we sometimes think that RV components talk to each other. They conspire to create problems all at the same time. Russ and Tina De Maris ran into two separate incidents of RVers with circuit breaker issues within two weeks of each other. Since they seldom act up, when a breaker does "go gunnybag" it can be a bit of a mystery for RVers. Here is a short look into the world of these voltage interrupters.

RV holding tanks: Use treatments?
"I stink, therefore I am," says a philosopher that lives under my RV. He is a rather nondescript fellow, about six feet tall, four feet wide, and a thin six inches thick. He seems to prefer a dark suit, in fact, every time you lay eyes on him, he's laying about, clad in the black skin of plastic suited to folks of his kind. Although he is never invited inside, from time to time he does -- in an awful way -- make his presence known. He is a windy fellow, and many of my associates simply state, "He's full of it." And so he is, your black water holding tank. Read more.

Are rising fuel prices
about to break?

Some RVers will keep on traveling no matter how high the price of gas goes. They may not travel as far as in the past, nor certainly not as far as they'd like. But a good number of RVers have said they just can't swear off RV travel, even with fuel prices as nasty as they are. Russ De Maris has some thoughts about high gas prices and RVing.

Stupid tourists! Oh, it takes all kinds!
Rangers at Yellowstone were horrified last week after someone from halfway across the country watching the Old Faithful geyser webcam spotted a group of people standing right at the cone of the geyser. It turns out it was a tour group of 30 people, just casually taking pictures -- far closer to the geyser than what is permitted. Read more.

Stop your shower head from dribbling
When you shut water off at the shower head and the faucet valves remain open, contaminated water could seep back into your fresh water system.  Most RV manuals say this dribbling is "normal" and means the unit is working properly. Do the water saver shower-heads used in regular house bathrooms dribble? They do not, so why do we need a dribbling shower in our RV wasting precious hot water? Here's how to get rid of the dribble

Sisters on the Fly, is a group of women who love to fly fish, ride horses and caravan with vintage trailers. RV DoctorAsk the Doctor
The RV Doctor, Gary Bunzer, answers your questions.

New tires fail after three days use
Dear Gary,
We have a Keystone Laredo which came with Mission tires. Within three days we had two tires fail. One had a bubble and the other blew out five miles from home while heading to the mountains. It did damage to the trailer. Tireco, (the parent company), will not cover the damage. They say the tire that blew had impact/road hazard damage. I don't believe this at all. We had 50 percent of the tires go bad on this RV in three days. They did pay for the bubbled tire. I see on the web that there are numerous complaints regarding these tires. Can you give me information on these tires, or what recourse we have? --Louise C., (Kernersville, NC)

Giving Something Back. . . RVtravel.com donates $50 a week to a cause we believe is particularly worthy. We realize this isn't a whole lot, but every dollar helps these groups -- all of them angels to those they serve.

This week we donated to Clothes For Kids, a program in western Washington that provides clothing at no cost to children in families struggling to make ends meet. "Clothing that is the right size, warm, comfortable, and allows a child to fit in with peers is essential to a positive learning environment," the organization states on its website. The RV Shrink
RVer seems to have it all but is bored
Dear Dr. R.V. Shrink:
I can't believe I am saying this, but I'm bored out of my gourd. I have been looking forward to traveling full-time in our RV for a dozen years. Now that I have retired, my wife and I have been on the road for just less than a year and I am a bit disillusioned. We both have many interests, love to travel, get along fine in a confined space, enjoy life and the many friendly people we meet. So, what's wrong with me? Why do I feel I'm missing something? I'm always thinking I should be doing more. If you could get my head screwed on straight I would be forever grateful. --Lost in Paradise, MI

Boondocking tips
with Bob Difley

Check around for gray water dumping facilities
When you arrive at no hook-up campgrounds, like the forest service, Corps of Engineers, state parks or BLM, walk through the campground or ask the host if they have gray water dumping facilities. Often these are no more than a pipe set flush with the ground surrounded by a shallow concrete basin. Typically there may be several scattered around the campground, usually adjacent to a drinking water source. If you find one, use it rather than adding your gray water (which you collect in a plastic tub) from dish washing and rinsing, teeth brushing, hand washing, and pasta cooking to your waste tanks.

Bob Difley is the author of the eBooks Boondocking: Finding the Perfect Campsite on America's Public Lands and the Snowbird Guide to Boondocking in the Southwest Deserts, both available for instant delivery via email at RVbookstore.com.

What is an RV tow dolly?
A tow dolly is a two wheeled trailer used to transport the vehicle you are towing with the drive wheels off of the ground. Tow dollies are a good choice when the vehicle you are towing cannot be towed with all four wheels down or if the vehicle would require expensive modifications to tow with all four wheels down. Home of the Jackalope
Douglas, Wyoming
Anyone who has visited a roadside trading post in the rural American West has seen a jackalope. The creatures look like a jackrabbit with horns. The best place to learn about jackalopes and buy one ready for mounting on your wall is in Douglas, where the jackalope was invented in taxidermy. About the RVtravel.com editor
Chuck Woodbury has explored America by RV for nearly three decades. In the '90s he published the quirky travel newspaper Out West about his adventures, and he was an "on the road" writer for the New York Times Syndicate. Nowadays, he lives near Seattle where he drinks massive amounts of coffee and travels often in his motorhome and sometimes by plane when vast expanses of saltwater would turn his RV into a leaky submarine. He is the host of the Better Business Bureau DVD "Buying a Recreational Vehicle," the definitive guide to purchasing an RV the right way.

Riddle answer: Three. The doorman lets in those who answer with the number of letters in the word the doorman says.

Everything in this newsletter is true to the best of our knowledge. But we occasionally get something wrong. We're just human! So don't go spending $10,000 on something we said was good simply because we said so, or fixing something according to what we suggested (check with your own technician first). Maybe we made a mistake. So be sure to check things out. At RVbookstore.com we strive for excellence in all we do. Our customers receive super fast service. Our motto is "You need it so we speed it," and no truer words were ever spoken!
