ARCO
is running new TV commercials that celebrate that customers no longer
must pay 45 cents when using their ATM cards to buy gas. In the commercials,
happy actors (pretending to be happy customers) dance with
joy because they are so beside themselves with happiness!
To make this occasion even happier, ARCO proudly proclaims that you can now use a credit card to pay for your gas! Other
stations, of course, have always allowed this. The actors in the
commercials are happy at this news, too. Oh, is there no end to the happiness? But, wait. . . there is something ARCO is not mentioning.
Nowhere in its happy commercials does ARCO inform you that if you want to
use your credit card, you'll pay extra. At my local station, it's 10
cents more. So put 25 gallons in your Mini Winnie and you'll pay an
extra $2.50 over cash customers! And, really, most other stations charge
the same price, cash or credit. So is paying more something to be happy about?
I don't object to ARCO charging more for credit card sales. That's its
business. But if it wants to boast about accepting credit cards, then it
should be honest and state you'll pay more. As is, the credit card message piggybacks along with the main one about SAVING MONEY. To me, the ads are
incomplete and misleading.

Overnight stays in Virginia State Park's campgrounds, cabins and lodges increased three percent from 2010 to a record high of 1,055,875. Overall attendance of 7,836,246 was the second highest in the system's history, down slightly from the record of 8,065,558 in 2010.
A Good Sam Enterprises company that promotes RV shows has successfully stopped a North Carolina RV show from using the words, "North Carolina" in advertising an upcoming show. AGI Productions got a restraining order against Apple Rock Advertising and Promotion, successfully arguing that the latter had sold the rights to the name "North Carolina RV Show" several years ago.
Despite rain on opening day, 2012 Florida RV SuperShow organizers say the attendance of 54,000 was a new record. Exhibitors said they had good sales, and felt there was more than just window-shopping going on.
Ohio's state park officials have
pulled 372 trash cans out of the parks in three years. Results? The
state says there's less trash on park trails and the agency saved
$65,000 in trash removal in 2010. While not in place in all parks,
officials say they'll expand the program to more parks this year.
While park visitation numbers are 5 percent below 2010 levels, North Dakota State Park officials are still rejoicing. While flooding, oil slicks, and other problems plagued the Peace Garden State, total park visitation in 2011 was 1,044,685. Lewis & Clark State Park bannered the system this year with a 34 percent increase in visitors over last year, bucking the system-wide trend. A park ranger at Florida's Curry Hammock State Park had an unwelcome encounter with a water moccasin January 12. The ranger was bitten by the cottonmouth while clearing weeds. A venom response team provided anti-venom for treatment. Water moccasins are one of six poisonous snakes common in Florida.

A Brampton, Ontario woman
is offering, "a large reward" for the return of her missing Miniature
Pincher lost from the Milton Heights campground in Mississauga. Meisha
the dog was apparently frightened by the Canada Day fireworks last year
and lit out from her tent. Her owner report that doggy
psychics believe the missing minpin is being held by someone within
three blocks of Mississauga's Square One.
Two California RVers are fighting it out with federal attorneys as to who gets to keep a cool half-million dollars picked up in a traffic stop in Texas. Last November state troopers stopped an RV for following another vehicle too closely. A search revealed marijuana, cocaine, and nearly $500,000 in tight packages. The men were not charged with a crime, but the feds want the money. A court will decide who gets the green.
Royal Canadian Mounties
are looking for someone who tried to blow up an occupied RV near
Whistler, B.C. on Monday the 16th. The motorhome occupants, two men,
first thought an LP tank had blown up, but turns out someone had placed a
bomb on the rig. Police say they already knew the potential victims and
surmise the bombing had something to do with their activities and
associates.
Wahoo for Wanahoo, so says the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The agency is working on an agreement to take over management of the Lake Wanahoo recreational facilities on the Lower Platte. Included in the deal is a 662-acre reservoir, 74 RV sites, and 60 tent camp spots. The operation is currently handled by the Lower Platte North Natural Resources District. Colorado's St. Vrain State Park
may soon become the site of oil drilling operations. Park commissioners
voted to authorize negotiations for drilling on a 10-acre site "in the
most rural part of the park." Advocates say drilling now may prevent
wells from outside the park from tapping away resources the park could
sell itself. Opponents fear a bad precedent could be set by developing
mineral rights on state park lands.
Twelve Oaks RV Resort near
Orlando, Florida appears to have lost the fight of its life. Policy
agency MetroPlan Orlando voted Tuesday to proceed with the controversial
Wekiva Parkway project that will complete a beltway through the area.
Unfortunately, the beltway will route through the middle of the resort
that 150 people call home. The oldest resident in the park is 101.

Some Florida RV parks are
reporting record numbers of snowbirds flocking in, many without prior
reservations. Florida's west coast seems to be blessed with the greatest
influx of visitors, while other parts of the state are recording flat
or even declining levels compared to last season. It was a hot time in the old town of Acoma, New Mexico
last week. An RV owned by hunters caught fire at the Sky City RV Park,
and the park had to be evacuated for the danger. It seems the rig
contained 1,200 rounds of ammunition, gunpowder, several gallons of
alcohol cleaning fluid, and five small propane tanks.
UPDATE (Monday, Jan. 23: The Stewarts have been found). South Texas police are looking for Bruce and Linda Stewart from Fort Frances, Ont., who have not been heard from since mid-December. They were last tracked to the Snow to Sun RV Park in Weslaco, Texas but may now be in the Rio Grande Valley or even in the Yuma, Ariz., area. They were last seen pulling a trailer in a 2006 gray, four-door pickup with Ontario plates, most likely with a red canoe on top. Contact 1-888-310-1122 if you have info. The Winnebago County Forest Preserve in Rockford, Illinois is seeking a seasonal campground host 30 hours a week from April to November. Must own an RV. More info.
Texas
State Parks got a big helping hand in the form of a half-million dollar
donation from the non-profit Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation. This
makes nearly a million dollars worth of donations since the service
reached out for help in early December to meet a $4.6 million budget shortfall.
Police say three men who swiped beer from a Dallas, Texas gas station
made a getaway in a Class C motorhome. A nearby police officer gave
chase forcing the runaway robbers to a stop. Under gunpoint the three
men and a dog, Lola, came out of the RV. Two of the beer-snatchers were
arrested, but the rig's driver -- and Lola -- were released.
When
a seven year-old girl suffering respiratory problems showed up at a
Hawkins County Tennessee hospital a couple of weeks ago, doctors were
concerned. When they heard from a concerned relative the child may have
been exposed to methamphetamine manufacturing, docs told cops, and cops
found a meth lab in the girl's mother's RV at the Greenland Campground
in Churchill. Mom's in jail; the daughter who has recovered, is being
cared for by the state.
Marathon City, Florida officials have given a green light to the construction of a high-end RV park at Marathon Marina. Shrink Alarmed at rising camping fees Dear R.V. Shrink:
We have been RVers for many years. My wife and I would be considered "on our way to forever together." We are both well into our golden years and think alike. Lately we grumble more often about the cost of things we enjoy, especially camping fees. Is it just our age? We remember when increases were three to five percent, but now they seem to jump 20 to 40 percent at a crack. We have watched camping fees rise over the years at a steady normal pace but now we see some of our favorite places almost doubling in price, while at the same time cutting service and maintenance. Are we just getting crotchety in our old age or do we have a valid concern? --California Dreamin' of the good ole days Read the Shrink's response.

The Nellie E Saloon Near Parker, Arizona The Nellie E Saloon (aka Desert Bar) is five miles down a windy, rocky and dusty dirt road and definitely worth the effort to get there. It's best to leave your RV behind and drive your car or truck down the dusty road. On weekends, October through March, enjoy live music. You might get lucky and catch the Cell Phone Cowboys. Now might be a good time to invest in solar
Now might be a good time to invest in solar panels if you do a lot of boondocking. Internationally, solar panel prices have plummeted resulting in much lower prices for a system. Find a company that specializes in RV solar systems, such as AM Solar, and get an estimate. And if you are even a little handy with tools, do the installation yourself. Several websites offer installation instructions and videos. And if you have a hard time swallowing the initial cost, remember that after the installation you'll be streaming free electricity from the sun on a system with no moving parts and requiring little maintenance.

Why block RV tires in storage?

Mystery solved Some people believe that snowbirds go south for the winter -- to places like Arizona, Texas and Florida. Well, not all snowbirds escape the winter cold. We offer this photo as evidence. It was taken in Bellevue, Wash., by Dawna Grand during the recent snow storm in the Puget Sound area. But now that we think about it. . . we don't see any birds in this picture? Hummmmm?
