FROM CHUCK WOODBURY
editor, http://www.RVtraveler.com
Welcome to Issue 54 of the RV Traveler Newsletter.
I am off again on another trip, this time a short one with my wife
and daughter Emily to the Oregon and Northern California coasts.
It's Spring Break for my 11-year-old daughter and our family
tries to get away this time every year, usually flying
somewhere warm, trading our Northwest rain gear for shorts
and suntan oil.
But it's been a long time since we've been away as a family
in our motorhome. And my daughter can't even remember the
Redwoods from her last trip there when she was very young.
So we'll hit the tourist traps and gift shops along the way --
making sure to visit a Drive-Thru Tree or two and dine at the
fabulous Samoa Cookhouse in the Eureka, Calif., area. Of course,
the highlight of our adventure will be camping and hiking in some
of the Redwood groves in both Redwood National Park and then
along the Avenue of the Giants (a detour off U.S. 101) farther
south, where there are beautiful State Park campgrounds right
in the magnificent groves.
Anyone who has never seen a Redwood tree is always amazed
at the first sight of one. Although the coastal redwoods are
not as massive in girth (width) as their Giant Sequoia cousins
inland, they are nearly as wide and reach so high into the
sky that you often cannot even see their tops.
On our way to the Redwoods, we'll follow the southern
third of the Oregon Coast, which is surely one of the most
beautiful drives in America, and an easy one in an RV. State
park campgrounds are all along the way, in some cases a
few dozen yards from the ocean shore.
I'll have an update of the trip in the next couple of issues, and
I still have a few things to write about my recent visit to
Arizona as well. So stay tuned. And please tell your RVer
friends to sign up for this newsletter. Thanks.

GAS PRICES EXPECTED TO FALL
Good news for all motorists and that certainly includes RVers.
The Energy Department now believes that gasoline prices will
continue to decline through the summer because of falling crude
oil prices and optimistic expectations for the war in Iraq. The
department is now forecasting that gasoline prices will average
$1.56 a gallon during the summer vacation driving season,
substantially less than its prediction a month ago of $1.70.

REVIEW: ALFA SEE YA MOTORHOME
A review of the 2003 Alfa See Ya Motorhome is the cover story
in the April edition of Family Motor Coaching Magazine. The writer
was impressed by the relatively new RV: He wrote: "The See Ya
diesel pusher is tailored to accommodate full-timers, or any RVer
who enjoys long stays in a luxury environment. It offers so much
that every sort of coach aficionado from the weekender to the
vacationer to those in the market for the coach of their dreams
should take a long look at it." Read more.

BREAKING NEWS
WI-FI INTERNET EXPANDING FAST AT TRUCK STOPS
RVers are climbing on the WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) Internet
bandwagon in a big way. Wi-Fi allows high speed access from
both home and public networks using a special PC card available
for about $50 on average. Among the first to establish Wi-Fi
in its stores was Starbucks, and McDonalds is about to follow in
some of its stores. Of special interest to RVers is that two
truck stop chains, Flying J and Petro, are now offering the service
at many of their locations. Flying J says half of its 160 stores now
offer the service, which it is aimed at both truckers and the
general traveling public.
JAYCO SUSPENDS CLASS A PRODUCTION
Jayco Inc., is suspending production of its Avatar and Firenza

RANDOM RV THOUGHT
Submitted by reader Bill Forrest: "I recommend you have
somebody behind you when you pull out to see that you don't
trash the neighbors awnings and/or leave anything you may
need at the next stop. . . I have a large collection of things people
forget at their campsite. Items were left underneath where the RV
was parked, on the table and elsewhere and included pressure
reducers, hoses, hose shut off valves, hose stubs for filling fresh
water tanks with shutoff valves, awning hooks, table covers and
clamps, rugs, wheel chalks, tow bar covers, a jack handle, garbage,
and once even a dog (we caught the owners)." Do you have a Random
RV Thought? Email it to Chuck Woodbury at outwest@seanet.com.
