Welcome to Issue 58 of the RV Traveler Newsletter.

I'd like to tell you about Ken and Ellie Hamill. They are the editors
of the 2003 Big Rig Best Bets Campgrounds Directory, which
lists RV parks that accommodate RVs 40 feet or longer. After
Ken retired a few years ago, he and Ellie hit the road in their
40-foot motorcoach. They soon learned that RVers in king-
sized RVs had a unique problem locating parks with campsites
that could easily accommodate big rigs. And there was no
guidebook that listed such parks. Ken and Ellie figured there
should be.

And so, thousands of miles and campground-inspections later, Ken
and Ellie published the first edition of Big Rig Best Bets. It was —
and still is — the only directory that not only lists parks that
accept big rigs, but those that are designed with large RVs in mind.
Unlike other campground directories, the authors visited every
park in their book, even pointing out specific campsites that are
best for ease of entry, scenic location or another reason. Ken and
Ellie also include tips on good nearby restaurants, local attractions
and even fishing holes.

Nowadays, Ken and Ellie live full time in their RV, traveling the
USA, inspecting RV parks as they go. Those that are good for big
rigs get listed; those that aren't, don't. The 2003 directory
includes hundreds of RV parks in 26 states.

Publishing Big Rig Best Bets isn't making Ken and Ellie wealthy,
but it helps fund their full-time travels throughout America.

WHAT IF YOUR WALLET FELL INTO AN OUTHOUSE?
A few months ago, I witnessed a panicked woman exiting a pit
toilet. "My camera fell down there!" she screamed, pointing into
the outhouse, where the camera had somehow tumbled from
her possession into the dark depths of a space where no human
should dare visit. It was a cheap camera, so the loss was
minimal. However, it reminded me of a short essay I had written
years earlier when I pondered what I would do if my wallet
should plunge into such a place. Would I attempt to retrieve it,
or would I go through the hassle of replacing my drivers license,
credit cards and the other valuable contents? What would you
do? Here is what I concluded.

DIESEL PRICES CONTINUE TO DECLINE
According to figures released by the Department of Energy's
Energy Information Administration May 5, the national average
diesel price fell last week to $1.484 from the previous week's
level of $1.508 per gallon.

OREGON CONSIDERS RAISING RV REGISTRATION FEES
Oregon's governor and the Oregon legislature are considering a
proposal to increase state registration fees by about 50 percent.
The increase would affect all vehicles. The two-year registration
fee on RVs would increase to approximately $260, up from $175.

MONTANA PROPOSING ONE-TIME RV REGISTRATION FEE
Lawmakers searching for money approved a measure in late April
that taps RV owners for a $10 million boost to the general fund.
The bill replaces annual registration for boats, motor homes,
trailers, snowmobiles, motorcycles and other off-road vehicles
with a one-time permanent registration fee. The fee is more
expensive than the current annual charges, and lawmakers
expect most owners of about 300,000 qualifying vehicles
to register in the first year.
