FROM CHUCK WOODBURY
editor, http://www.RVtraveler.com

Welcome to Issue 59 of the RV Traveler Newsletter, now read
by more than 52,700 RVers.

I received many responses after my confession last issue about
my fear of losing my wallet in a pit toilet. A reader named Bill
from Florida wrote that he, in fact, did accidentally lose his
wallet in such a place. "Luckily the wallet was on top and did
not sink," he wrote, adding that a park ranger with a long pole
and hook was able to retrieve it. "The wallet was then washed
down, bleached, then thrown away. But we did save all cards and
cash. Rubber gloves and bleach are lifesavers."

A reader named Judi wrote with a perspective on this topic that
I had not considered. "Being a woman, I am terrified that a ring or
gold bracelet will fall off while doing what all women must do after
a potty call. I tend to nearly make a fist, so the rings don't fall off,
and have seriously considered taking off the bracelets before
stepping inside. What would one do if that should happen? Can you
imagine sifting through all that gunk to find the lost item? Or
just let it go, and file a claim with the insurance company?
What a bone chilling thought!"

For those of you who missed my story about my fear of losing my
wallet down a pit toilet, you'll find it here.

FUEL PRICES CONTINUE TO DROP
According to figures released by the Department of Energy on
May 12, the national average diesel price fell last week to $1.444
from the previous week’s level of $1.484 per gallon. Meanwhile,
AAA reported that the nationwide average price of self-serve
regular gasoline dropped 10.5 cents per gallon since mid-April
to $1.497 per gallon, and is now at its lowest price since the end of
January. We received a note from a reader about a dramatic drop
in gas prices in Eureka, Calif., of 36 cents per gallon. The reason:
The local Costco store started selling gas, forcing local gas
stations to chop their prices to compete.

ELVIS' TRAVEL TRAILER
Did you know that "The King" and wife Priscilla received a travel
trailer as a wedding gift, and that they actually used it? Yup.
It's true, but perhaps even more incredible is that this little RV
may have contributed to the couple's divorce. Get the full scoop.

KOA TO OFFER HI-SPEED WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS
RVers staying at some KOA locations will soon be surfing the
Internet wirelessly from the comfort of their own rigs. KOA,
the nation's largest system of family campgrounds, has
partnered with HOTSPOTZZ, one of the nation's largest
providers of wireless Internet "hot spots," to offer high-speed
wireless Wi-Fi access. KOA expects to have nearly 100 of its
500 locations on the HOTSPOTZZ network by the end of 2003.
Already offering the service are KOA campgrounds in Billings,
Mont., Albuquerque, N.M., and Nashville, Tenn. The service is
free to subscribers to KOA Konnect, a dial-up ISP from KOA,
which is $19.95 per month. For others, the service will be
available for $4 for an hour or $8 for a 24-hour period, and can
be purchased at KOA locations. With Wi-Fi access, users can access
the Internet at a lightning fast 11 megabits per second, many times
faster than a traditional dial-up connection. Currently, the most
popular places to obtain a Wi-Fi connection are Starbucks and
Kinko's. However, McDonalds has begun offering access at some
of its stores, and other WiFi hot spots are popping up daily at
hotels, airports and elsewhere.

WORTH PONDERING
"To expect life to be tailored to our specifications is to
invite frustration." — Anon.

RANDOM RV THOUGHT
"Heating a motorhome takes far less energy than heating a
traditional home. Heating hot water for an RV shower is
accomplished with a tiny hot water heater compared to at home.
And how many people can wash their dinner dishes at home on
a couple of gallons of water or less like in an RV?"
