FROM CHUCK WOODBURY
editor, http://www.RVtraveler.com

Welcome to issue number 61 of the very best RV email
newsletter in the entire world, brought to you weekly by
a guy who is proud to admit that he has been RVing for nearly
all his life, beginning decades ago as a youngster, traveling at
first with his parents in a pea green, stone age tent trailer that
took close to three years to actually set up (okay, an
exaggeration, but it was a bear to prepare).

I did a lot of camping as a kid, first in the tent trailer and
later in a 15-foot Field and Stream travel trailer. My father
had only two weeks of vacation time each year, which he would
always devote to a family vacation in our RV. By the time I
was a teenager, I had toured the American West at least a
few times and visited most of the popular National Parks.

Specific memories of those trips are blurry now, but there are
bits and pieces of our adventures that I recall fondly. The one
memory that keeps surfacing at our family gatherings even
today is about the cake my mother baked in our Field and
Stream trailer in Glacier National Park.

It was a very cold and windy day, and our family of five spent
a few hours crammed inside the trailer trying to stay warm.
My mother decided it was a good time to bake a cake, which
she did. And while it smelled great, it was a flop. The cake
failed to rise, giving it the appearance of an extremely thick
pancake. Still, we kids ate it. The fact is, a child will eat anything
that contains sugar. Ever since that day, we have referred to
my mother's botched baking effort as the "Glacier Park Cake."
In her lifetime, I bet my mother has baked at least 500 cakes.
Four hundred and ninety-nine were delicious. One, the Glacier
Park Cake, was a disaster. The fact that this lone failed effort
lingers my family's memories is yet additional proof that life
is not fair.

My mother, now 80, is a strong and confident person. It does
not bother her that for more than four decades her family
has made fun of her disastrous attempt at a tasty desert. Frankly,
the laughs that this story have provided through the years are far
more rewarding than any cake could be. Just thinking about
that frigid day, huddled together with my young family in our
camping trailer makes me smile. And it brings to mind other
wonderful memories about our many adventures, and how
magical they were to the little boy who grew up to be me.

NEW IN OUR BOOKSTORE
"The RV Watch Dog: The RVer's Best Friend"

inferior ones? "RV Watch Dog," the first book of its kind, reveals
all the scams that are performed by shady RV repair shops.

MOTORHOME DRIVING TIP
"The most common RV driving problem, especially for owners of
extra-wide motorhomes, is a tendency to drive too far to the
right, because when you pilot a car you automatically center it
in the lane. But many RVs are wider. So subconsciously spacing
the left side of the RV from the lane stripes as you do your car
puts the right side of the craft on the curb, in the adjacent lane,
or scraping parked cars." From RVers Bible.
