FROM CHUCK WOODBURY
editor, http://www.RVtraveler.com

I wrote the little essay below a few years ago on one of my
roadtrips for Out West, the "on-the-road newspaper" I
published for 10 years about my motorhome travels around
the American West. On my trips, often alone, I had a lot of
time to think, and I kept a regular "Roadside Journal" that
I published in each quarterly issue of my newspaper. Here's
a snippet from one of those journals.

"Sometimes when I am working inside my motorhome I feel like
the Wizard of Oz. It has to do with working from a small space,
and knowing nobody knows where I am. Tonight all my window
shades are pulled and my electric heater is keeping me toasty
warm. I'm out of range of TV, and I don't feel like reading, so I
am writing. I am a writer lost in America in a tiny cabin
on wheels.

"My home is tidy, except for one dirty pan on my stove; earlier
it heated my dinner of tomato soup. A slice of apple pie is on the
counter. In an hour I will feast on it, along with a freshly-perked
cup of coffee. After that, I may step outside to visit my friends
the stars. Or I may remain inside, and stretch by walking laps in
my mini-house. Such a workout involves taking a few steps in
one direction and then a few steps in the other direction and
then repeating the process.

"Perhaps the greatest thing about my portable home is that I
associate it with so many wonderful adventures. We have been
to thousands of towns and met hundreds of people together.
Through its windows I have seen lakes and streams, mountain
peaks, wheat fields, farms, and all sorts of animals -- deer,
moose, antelope, cows, squirrels.

"Tomorrow I'll return the computer to its hiding spot, latch down
the drawers and cupboards, and point my motorized home east.
This is the life."

FUTURE FUEL PRICE STABILITY IN QUESTION
According to last week's Oil Price Information Service (OPIS)
Fleet Fueling News, demand for gasoline is as high as it has
ever been. Refineries are running at peak capacity.

Even with the steady flow of imports, supply remains a concern.
U.S. inventories of gasoline normally build from mid-May to
mid-June, but that hasn't happened this year, and there is no
comfort zone for supply. A single refinery problem could
cause large regional price spikes, OPIS reported. To make
matters worse, OPEC is soon likely to cut crude oil production
by one million barrels per day. But even if there’s no
significant increase in crude, prices at the pump are more
likely to be affected by regional supply and demand rather
than global politics.

Meanwhile, diesel supply is precarious. Prices have slumped as
they typically do in late spring, and the dip has been hastened by
a sell-off in natural gas. But inventories are low across the
United States, and refiners are maximizing gasoline output,
possibly to the detriment of diesel production. There's some
suggestion that current wholesale and retail low-sulfur diesel
prices may be as low as we're likely to see in the next 90 days.

WORTH PONDERING
"If I had known what it would be like to have it all, I
might have been willing to settle for less." — Lily Tomlin

RANDOM RV THOUGHT
From reader Bill Sansom: "I noticed something last week at a
park in Hood River, Ore. A fellow was setting up his fifth wheeler,
and was wearing a set of knee pads, the kind you can buy anywhere
for about $5. He told he has three pairs so he can always find them.
Using the pads saves time, the knees and clothes, and there is no
way you can get everything hooked up without getting on your
knees at least part of the time." Do you have a Random RV Thought?
