FROM CHUCK WOODBURY
editor, http://www.RVtraveler.com

Hello again. I hope you are enjoying this July 4th weekend.
I'm sticking close to home, which is my policy for the three
big summer-season holidays -- Memorial Day, Fourth of July
and Labor Day, when campgrounds are generally jam-packed.
Sometimes, however, I'm on the road at these times, so
I just join the crowd or find a campground far off the
beaten path. Typically, for my local camping trips, I
prefer to head out on a Sunday and return later in the
week to avoid the weekend crowds. Of course, I'm self-
employed in an Internet business with no set hours, so
I have the luxury of picking when I work and when I don't.

But, truth be told, even when I go away during the week,
my laptop computer and cell phone come along. They allow me
to keep in touch with the outside world. I'm able to send and
receive email, so even though I may be enjoying the great
outdoors, I usually devote an hour or two a day to business
affairs. I often marvel at how easy it is to travel and yet
still do my work. The ease at which this can be accomplished
enables tens of thousands (if not more) RVers to live a
life on the road, yet still earn a living.

Most of my correspondence is by email, and not by phone or
postal mail. I don't even need the services of a commercial
printer anymore for my letterhead and envelopes: I just
print them when needed on my portable ink-jet printer.
In a month I send a thousand emails. But in that same time,
I probably send less than a dozen letters by postal mail. I do
my banking online and get my spending money from ATMs
no matter where I am in the USA or abroad. So working
on the road in my RV, with all my conveniences, is not
much different than working in my home office. In most
cases, nobody knows I'm gone. I can even forward my
phone calls from my office number to my cell phone.

Two years ago, I sneaked away to New Zealand for a three-
week camper van tour of that beautiful country. My family,
friends and a few close business associates knew I had
left, but most of the people I do business with had no idea I
was half a world away. New Zealand is dotted with cheap
cyber cafes (and free Internet access at many libraries),
making it easy to check email. And calls to the United States
from phone booths cost less than a dime a minute in our
dollars. ATMs are nearly everywhere in New Zealand
(and, indeed, the entire world) and dispense local currency,
withdrawing the equivalent in U.S. funds (or your own
currency) from your bank back home.

When I started seriously RVing in the late '80s, I carried
along a manual typewriter and a 35mm film camera. I was a
freelance writer then, and with those now "analog" devices
I was able to earn a modest living. Nowadays, working
in a digital and cyber world, I am able to work easier, faster
and far more efficiently than back in those olden days.

I could go on forever here about all this. But I better stop
to fill you in on some news and information.

Oh, yes, one more reminder that if you spend time RVing
in Florida, please sign up for our new monthly Florida RVer
email newsletter, debuting next month.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A TRAILER HITCH FAILS
"Should your hitch fail, you will immediately notice heavy sway
from the trailer. Don't slam on the brakes because you could
jackknife. Instead, slow gradually as you move to the side of
the road. You'll feel and hear the trailer bumping the back of the
tow vehicle. That's okay. Your goal is to get off the road safely
and out of the way of other drivers."
From RVers Bible

DON'T FORGET TO REGISTER YOUR TIRES
When buying new tires for your vehicle, don't forget to fill out
a tire registration form and mail it back to the manufacturer,
reminds the Tire Industry Safety Council. "The purpose of
tire registration is to enable the manufacturer to contact you
directly in the event of a recall," said Council Chairman
Donald B. Shea. "While a recall is unlikely, it's important to
make sure your tires are properly registered just in case."

WORTH PONDERING
"Write it on your heart that every day is the best day
in the year." —Ralph Waldo Emerson

RANDOM RV THOUGHT
"Some people think RVers waste energy by driving their big
rigs. But think of how much they save when camped. A tank
of propane can go forever for cooking and heating the rig.
When boondocking, RVers can wash dishes and take a shower
with only couple of gallons of water. Some RVers use solar
panels for electricity, so they are using no public power."
