FROM CHUCK WOODBURY
editor, http://www.RVtraveler.com
When we travel by RV, we see many places. But, to me, more
important than the places I see are the friends I make.
One of those friends just died. His name was Bob Ivers, and I
met him 12 years ago in Yakima, Washington. While the name
Bob Ivers is likely unfamiliar to you, you may have actually seen
him. Bob was an actor, who called Hollywood home until his wife
fell ill and he had to give up his career to follow her to eastern
Washington for medical treatment. She died in 1981.
I met Bob in a shopping center parking lot. I introduced myself as
a traveling journalist, and he took the opportunity to introduce
himself as an ex-actor."I co-starred with Elvis Presley as his
sidekick in 'G.I. Blues,'" he said casually. "I knew Elvis from 1960
to 1968. He was fun to work with. Everybody loved him." Bob also
starred with Jerry Lewis in "Delicate Delinquent," and played a
"Glob," in "I Married A Monster From Outer Space."
When I met Bob he was operating an advertising agency in Yakima.
He got back into show biz in a little way, syndicating movie
reviews to a few regional TV stations and newspapers. We spent
an hour chatting in my motorhome, sipping freshly brewed coffee
I made for the occasion.
A week after returning home I received a letter from Bob. Inside
was a publicity photo of he and Elvis in a scene from G.I. Blues.
That was the only time I visited with Bob in person, but we spoke
occasionally by phone. He'd call me with a question or I'd call him.
We enjoyed discussing our various media projects.
Bob died earlier this year. No one notified me, for we had no friends
in common. Then a few weeks ago, a Yakima public relations person
called to pitch a story. "By any chance do you know Bob Ivers?" I
asked. And she told me the sad news.
Bob was truly a good guy who made the very best of life that got
detoured in mid-stream. I'll miss his phone calls.
LETTERS IN RESPONSE TO LAST ISSUE'S EDITOR ESSAY
Many of you wrote to me after my short essay last issue about my
childhood fear of alligators under my bed, and my occasional
present-day fear of strange sounds outside my RV at night in a remote
campground. Don't miss the letter from James, about when he awoke
in the middle of the night with an apparent nightmare-come-true: his RV
rolling out of control down the highway.

RANDOM RV THOUGHT
"If you are stressed out, here is a cure: Drive or tow your RV
to a beautiful campground. When it gets dark, make a campfire.
Place a lawn chair a few feet upwind from the campfire and
sit in it. Watch the flames dance, feel the warmth, listen to
to the soothing crackling of the burning wood and inhale the
wonderful aroma. Within three minutes all your stress will be
gone." Do you have a Random RV Thought?
Email it to Chuck Woodbury at outwest@seanet.com.
TRIVIA ANSWER
The Blue Bird Body Company was founded by Mr. A.L. Luce in 1927.
At some point when Mr. & Mrs. Luce were considering names for
their new company (building school busses). As the story goes, Mrs. Luce
was looking out the breakfast window during one of the "name"
discussions and saw a bluebird sitting on a fence post."That's it,"
she said.
