FROM CHUCK WOODBURY
editor, http://www.RVtraveler.com

Most of my RV travels are in the American West. I get into
Canada once in awhile and I have done two big road trips to the
East. But mostly I stick to the 11 western states. People
ask me what part of the West I think is the most beautiful. And
I always have a hard time answering because there are so many
beautiful places. But, when pinned down, I do offer some
answers. My favorite place just might be the red rock country
of southern Utah including the national parks of Bryce Canyon,
Capitol Reef and Zion. Capitol Reef is the least known of the
three and worth the trip. To get to Bryce Canyon and
Capitol Reef National Parks, take Utah Route 12, which is
a ribbon of heaven -- a spectacular drive.

The Oregon and northern California coasts are beautiful
along California Route 1 and U.S. 101. Scenic routes off
the main highways can be even more impressive.

I love the deserts of the Southwest, including Death Valley in
California, an awesome and isolated piece of the West, and for
the last few years a National Park. I visit in the winter when
it's cold in much of the country but typically warm here. I
realize that many people do not share my love of the desert:
beauty here is definitely in the eye of the beholder.

Montana and Wyoming are beautiful states with few
people. More than any other state except perhaps Nevada,
Wyoming feels like the old West. There are plenty of real
cowboys. Western Montana is becoming more populated all
the time, but it's still pretty much wide open. My favorite
big towns in Montana are Butte and Missoula.

The Colorado Rockies are spectacular, especially around
Telluride and Ouray. Too bad that some of the small towns
have turned to gambling to survive. It's ruined Cripple Creek,
where the main street is a casino row. A drive through
Rocky Mountain National Park reaches so far into the sky
that the terrain is treeless tundra (try saying those last
few words fast, a few times in row).

I love Washington's San Juan Islands. The ferry ride to
the islands is fun and cheap (not in an RV, however), and
what spectacular views along the way! The nearby Olympic
Peninsula is also nice, although vast expanses of the clear
cut forests are ugly and disturbing. The Hoh Rainforest,
a stand of old growth timber within Olympic National Park
is gorgeous -- deep green, mossy and usually drippy wet.
The is one place to visit in the rain.

Of course, California's Yosemite National Park is one of the
most spectacular places in the West and the world. But it's often
overrun with visitors, so much so that the joy of the place
can get buried in the congestion. It's best to visit here in the
off-season.

I could list many other great places, but will save them for
another time.

NEW MOTORHOME DOUBLES AS A LUXURY BOAT!
Just when you think you have seen everything along comes
a luxury motorhome that you can drive right into a lake and
cruise like you're in a luxury yacht! Once afloat, the 45-foot
Terra Wind's road transmission is placed in neutral and two
propellers and traditional rudders take over. You might expect
such an RV to look very strange, but it's hard to tell it's not
a regular luxury motorcoach. The price tag of the unique RV
runs $850,000 to $1.2 million, and no fishing tackle is
included. See a picture of amphibious RV in the water.

FOR FULLTIMERS: ESTABLISHING A HOME BASE
A big decision when going fulltime in an RV is where to establish

advantages (tax savings, for one) in adopting one state over
another. Here is a list of the most popular home base states
and what advantages each offers full-timers.

cottage at the beach. Nowadays, they dream of owning an
RV, in which case they can be at one place one day and
another place the next." Do you have a Random RV Thought?
