FROM CHUCK WOODBURY
editor, http://www.RVtraveler.com

I have been struggling all day today (Friday) to come up
with a topic for this space. I'm not a happy guy when a
deadline nears and I'm struggling to meet it. I feel
anxious, which has been my general mood much of today.
That is until about a half hour ago, when my phone rang.
An angry woman was on the line. She didn't know it, but
she inspired me.

"Do you sell a book on buying a used RV?" she asked. I said,
yes, we sell such a book at our RV Bookstore, but it's not in
printed form but an ebook available as a download.

"Well, I've been at the library for an hour and a half trying
to find the phone number of the author because the library
won't let me order the book," she huffed. "And I can't find
his phone number anywhere." I explained that the author is
an RV technician and he's a busy fellow and he has no need to
get involved in the selling of his ebook because it's an easy
process accomplished automatically through the magic
of the Internet.

"Well, I guess he's not very interested in having people
buy the book," she said, sounding angry. And I said, no,
that wasn't true. "The only way he and many other RV
authors are able to publish a book is the way he did it, as a
computer file," I explained. "He didn't have to seek out a
company to publish it, he didn't have to print the book
-- at considerable expense -- and he didn't have to deal with
shipping individual copies to customers." I told her it was
only because of the Internet that he could write the book and
make it available to a world-wide audience of computer-savvy
RVers who would appreciate the information.

"Well, do you have his phone number so I can call him?" she
again insisted. Again, I said no. I suggested she search the
Internet using his name, Les Doll, and then get his email
address. "I already spent an hour and a half on the Internet
at the library, and they won't even let me send an email,"
she barked, now almost livid. I calmly suggested that perhaps
she could use a friend's computer to order the ebook and
then print it out on his or her computer. I was trying to
be helpful. She didn't even hear me.

"Well I guess it's his prerogative if he doesn't want my
business," she said. And then she slammed down the phone
and was gone. "And you have a nice day, too," I thought.

I think it's great that people like Les Doll and others can
publish books on the Internet without the intervention of
book publishing companies that seldom want such specialized
titles anyway. For those of us who love to RV, through
ebooks we have access to great information that would never
be published otherwise. The little guy can truly be heard
through the publication of an electronic book, and in some
cases he or she can even earn a part- or full-time income
doing so.

After I hung up the phone, I wished I could have got the woman
back on the line for one parting comment on my part, which
I won't mention here. Still, she inspired this little essay. So
I suppose what I really needed to tell her was "thanks."

By the way, if you are interested in Les Doll's book "How To
Buy A Used RV," you will find it here.
