FROM CHUCK WOODBURY
editor, http://www.RVtraveler.com
A few of last week's reader letters offered food for thought.
Reader James MacFarlane wrote: "In my hometown of
Santa Barbara, a law was recently passed that prohibits
ANY RV from parking on ANY street for more than two hours.
Citizens have complained that RVers park huge rigs in
inappropriate places, leaving their motors or generators
running. Some litter and, perhaps worst of all, some have
dumped their holding tanks on the street.
"I am also a motorcyclist. Motorcycles too, suffered a bad
reputation from the few who abused the system. It was up
to the 'good' cyclist to break the mold and set good examples.
Perhaps that needs to happen in the RV world as well. I know
one thing: If the few RVers that are blowing it don't
straighten out, ALL RVers will suffer."
The idea of behaving ourselves is obviously a good one.
Dumping a holding tank in only an approved location is
a good start. In a recent news group posting an RVer
advocated dumping holding tanks down sewer drains along
city streets. I can only imagine what would happen if RVers
adopted this stupid policy, and where some of that waste
would ultimately end up not to mention the disgust
bystanders would experience witnessing Grandma and
Grandpa lighten their load at the local street corner.
Talk about creating a negative image! While I believe that
99% of all RVers are responsible, alas, some are not.
High on my list of such people are the clueless among us
who squat in Walmart parking lots for weeks on end.
Read what I think of these freeloaders. Mr. MacFarlane's
idea that "good RVers" can indeed help smooth over the
actions of the bad apples makes sense.
A Canadian reader named Seann wrote to suggest yet
another non-traditional use for an RV, one that would
certainly reflect well on the RV crowd. "There is currently
a major forest fire in the Kelowna, B.C., area and
thousands of people have been evacuated," he wrote. "It's
been suggested that we allow some of these people to use
our RVs until the danger passes."
What a great idea! Although the thought of strangers living
in our precious RVs might be discomforting, what a kind
gesture it would be to offer a displaced family (that we trust)
a temporary sanctuary during a stressful and scary time.
Finally, reader Robert Finke, a beginning RVer, wrote with
a question I couldn't answer: "Do you know of a publication
that lists which roads and tunnels you cannot travel with an
RV with a propane tank?"
I don't know of such a publication, and I'm not even aware of
any roads and/or tunnels where you can't pass with a vehicle
carrying a propane tank. Are there such places? If so, let me
know and I'll post the information to a web page. If there are
enough such places, perhaps I could devote a web page to
listing them.
Now. . . exciting news and information.

ROAD CONSTRUCTION AHEAD
A good time to be an RVer is when you get stuck at a highway
road construction zone, when you can adjourn to the RV and
make lunch, watch TV or play "Go Fish" with your three year old.
But, really, it's better to avoid highway construction zones
altogether. And lucky for you, here's a website where you can
learn how to do just that:
SPEAKING OF ROADSIDE CONSTRUCTION. . .
When passing through some road construction zones, you must
follow a vehicle called a pilot car. Have you ever wondered
what job title the drivers of these vehicles have? At a cocktail
party, for example, when asked what they do, do they answer
"I'm a pilot." Does that seem right to you?"

A READER'S EMBARRASSING RV MOMENT
From an RV Traveler reader named Tony:
"I was exploring a large RV dealer's lot. While returning to my
car I noticed a Discovery motorhome parked alongside some new
Class A's. I decided to take a look and the first thing I noticed was
it had a nice floor plan. Before leaving I opened an overhead
kitchen cabinet and to my surprise it was filled with can goods!
It was then I realized I had just toured the rig of a customer
who was probably inside the camping store. I can't tell you how
embarrassed I was. It would have really been something if the
owner returned before I left."
