FROM CHUCK WOODBURY
editor, http://www.RVtraveler.com

Welcome to another information-packed edition of
RV Traveler, the world's largest consumer email
newsletter about RVing with 58,000 subscribers from
coast-to-coast and in dozens of countries around
the globe.

I was surprised by the results of last issue's reader
survey where I asked if you had ever spent the night in
your RV at a Walmart store. As you probably know, with
some exceptions, Walmarts allow an overnight stay
in a self-contained RV in their parking lots.

What raised my eyebrow was how many of you have
actually stayed at a Walmart. Out of 1,700 responses, a
whopping 45% of you reported you have stayed. I never
imagined the percentage would be so high.

Personally, I have never stayed at a Walmart. I understand,
however, why others do.

One woman reported that while traveling alone in her RV
she suddenly became very ill. "I had all I could do to just
keep driving," she said. "It was already dark and I had no
idea if there were any RV parks nearby." She had never
before stayed at a Walmart. "But there I was, too sick to
drive, and a Walmart was ahead." So she pulled into the
parking lot, climbed into bed and was well enough the
next morning to resume her trip.

Other RVers stay when they are simply too tired to go on.
Face it, there are many places where an RV park or public
campground is not easy to find. At times like this, a
Walmart alongside the road is a good alternative. It isn't
"camping," but it's a far safer place to spend a night than
alongside the road. Many RVers have told me that they object
to paying $20 to $30 for a campsite when all they need is a
level place to park for six-10 hours to grab some sleep.

But there are some RVers who consider Walmart a
"campground," and they commonly stay days or even weeks
on end. I have no respect for these people. They are abusing
a good thing and will, I predict, ultimately force Walmart to
ban overnight stays at all its stores. As it is, every day a
store or two posts "No Overnight Parking" signs.

So to those of you who stay at a Walmart, I urge you to
do so in moderation, and not as a way to beat the system.

WIRELESS INTERNET. . . THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY
One of the great delights of being a Wi-Fi user on the road
is that no matter where you are there's a decent chance that
you can get a high-speed Internet connection. If you're lucky,
you can even get a free connection. What's not to like? Well,
for one thing, at most public hotspots you have minimal, if any,
security. Doesn't sound like a big deal? Think again. Anyone
with a sniffer can look over your virtual shoulder at your
mail, your passwords, and your work. Learn more.

Reader letters. . .
Dear Chuck,
My friend bought a used travel trailer in August. In November
we noticed a leak in the corner by the entrance door that will
cost $5,000 to fix. Basically, he bought the trailer "as is"
with little paperwork in hand. He had been told about the leak,
but it was downplayed and he was assured verbally it was
totally fixed. Does he have recourse?

ANSWER: He bought it "as is." Whether the leak was
"downplayed or not," he chose to buy the RV. His recourse?
Fix the leak or get a raincoat.

Dear Chuck,
I read the letter last week from Mary Solano about her
husband's accident and I can relate. My story is different.
I was pulling a 19-foot Mallard when the trailer began
whipping back and forth. My husband tried to help me hold
the wheel but it did no good. We swung around and were suddenly
heading north in the south-bound freeway before ending up on
our car's side in a ditch. My husband, dog and cat had bumps
and bruises but I was pinned until some truckers with angels'
wings pulled me out. I am healed now (it has been 2 1/2 years).
We recently bought a 22-foot Nash 5th wheel and I am terrified.
I cannot drive with the trailer and am frozen with fear while
riding. Has anyone else had this problem? How did they deal
with the panic? I refuse to give up traveling and camping. I
would appreciate any hints your reader have.

FOLDING BIKES: COMPACT, HEALTHY TRANSPORTATION
One of the problems with motorhome travel, in particular,
is traveling from the campsite once the rig is parked
and leveled. So some RVers tow a small car, others bring along
a motorcycle. One very handy way to gain some extra
mobility is to bring along a folding bicycle. They're
lightweight, take up little space and can provide a good
and healthy way to explore beyond the campground. More.

COMPLETE GUIDE TO RV TOWING,
WEIGHTS, HITCH WORK AND BACKING

This ebook discusses all these subjects and more.

RV TECH CORNER with Mark Polk
Every component in a towing system has a weight rating. Never
exceed the lowest rated component in the system. For example,
your tow vehicle might be rated to tow 7,000 pounds, but if the
hitch receiver on the tow vehicle is rated for 5,000 pounds that's
the most you can tow. This can be especially true on motor homes.
The motor home might be rated to tow 6,000 pounds, but until
recently most receivers on motor homes were rated for
3,500 pounds.

Mark Polk is the host of the RV Education 101 series of RV
"how to" videos. Learn from Mark how to WINTERIZE an RV.
