FROM CHUCK WOODBURY
editor, http://www.RVtraveler.com

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We celebrated with
friends at our home near Seattle. All of us are "orphan
families," which means we have no relatives in the local
area. Our group has celebrated Thanksgiving together for
the last seven years, and we feel in many ways like family.
My daughter, now 12, has grown into a young lady through
those years. She and her best friend Jennifer started a tradition
many years ago of crawling beneath the dinner table and tying
everyone's shoelaces together. I made a bet with one of my
friends that this year the two young ladies would forgo the
tradition, being too large to fit underneath the table. But
I was wrong, for after dinner, while we adults chatted, the
girls slipped (with difficulty) from sight and did their work.
They invited along five-year-old Molly and six-year-old Thomas,
passing along tricks of the trade so they can take over next year.

Even though I have been close to home for recent Thanksgivings,
I have spent several on the road. The most memorable occasion
was in a state park campground in Arizona near Lake Havasu.
Somehow, all the campers got word that there would be a big
potluck Thanksgiving dinner. And so, in the warm afternoon
under a bright, sunny sky, we all gathered at several picnic
tables to feast and celebrate our good fortune. Here we all
were, away from family and friends with a group of
strangers. But, frankly, it was only a matter of minutes
before we all felt the warmth of friendship. And so, with
plenty of laughter and food to go around, we feasted as
we shared stories of our lives including those of our
RV travels -- where we had been, where we were going.

I know that many readers of this newsletter spend much
of each year on the road, and I suspect that they have similar
stories about holiday celebrations. Many new or aspiring
RVers worry about being away from their families during
holidays. What they soon learn is that there is a very large
"family" out there on the road with them and that when
holidays arrive, they find each other and reach out in
friendship.

I suspect that when these RVers' holidays celebrations are
over, each family returns to his or her RV and reflects not
only upon the holiday, but on the wonderful people they shared
it with. The absence of their own families is felt, for sure,
but the company of these once-strangers goes a long way
to filling the void and making them feel warm and appreciated
as only friends and family can do.

RV ROOF CARE
The roof on your RV is just as important as a roof on
any landlocked house. It protects you and your home from
some of the destructive forces of nature, Part-timers,
as well as fulltimers, need to plan regular maintenance
for the tops of their RVs. Proper roof maintenance will
keep your rig snug and dry

WHAT IS WORKAMPING?

Nearly all RVers have at least heard the word "Workamping,"
and most know what it means — or think they know. But there
are a few misconceptions. The most common are that Workampers
are retirees who work in campgrounds, and that Workamping
means trading work for a place to park an RV. Actually, not
all Workampers are retired. In fact, less than half consider
themselves retired. With the median age being 53, most
Workampers are not drawing a pension and cannot subsist
on rent-free camping alone. Read more.

LOCATING AND RESERVING A CAMPSITE
While we may haul our "houses" with us, we still need a plot
of land to park them for a day or night. That's where
campgrounds fit in. They can be privately owned or located
on public lands in state parks, national parks or national forests.
Here's an overview of most interest to new RVers of where to
find campgrounds and how to reserve a campsite.

BUMPER SNICKER

From reader Bill Powers: "Home sweet Home, where you can
scratch where you itch!" Have you seen a good one?
Email it to Chuck Woodbury at outwest@seanet.com .

Reader letter. . .
Dear Chuck,
The repair shop goofed on the appointment date for checking
our fifth wheel's wheel bearings as we were about to leave
on a three-month, 9,000-mile trip. Just a matter of hours
before we were to leave the shop finally got us in. We had the
bearings checked and packed just a year ago but didn't want
to start out on such a long trip without checking them again.

To make a long story short, we would have had major
problems if we hadn't made that 25 mile trip back to the
shop. They found one wheel bearing dry and rusting and one
was leaking. Even though we had lived in the RV the past
year it was parked for long periods while we volunteered
with Oregon Fish and Wildlife. We were certainly glad
our moves were only a half day or so.

We are now nearly two months into this trip and over
5,000 miles. It was worth the peace of mind to make that
long trip on narrow twisting roads back to the garage.

RV TECH CORNER with Mark Polk
NOAA weather radios (NWR) is a nationwide network of
radio stations that broadcast continuous weather
information directly from a nearby National Weather
Service Office. They broadcast National Weather Service
(NWS) warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard
information 24 hours a day. All RVers should purchase a
battery operated weather radio. Many of these radios
come with an alert feature that is triggered when the
NWS issues severe weather announcements or
emergency information. They are available at most
retail stores that sell electronic equipment. The prices
can range anywhere from $25 to $200 depending on the
quality of the receiver and the features. It is well worth
the cost to know what type of weather to expect when
traveling or camping in your RV.

Mark Polk is the host of the RV Education 101 series of RV
"how to" videos. Learn from Mark how to WINTERIZE an RV.

RANDOM RV THOUGHT
From reader Richard Distler: "My wife and I are part-time
RV volunteers who help build churches, work at Bible camps,
etc. Since my body is changing from getting older, and
because I need several changes of work clothes during the
week, we have been buying work clothes at second hand
stores. We're not poor just frugal."
