EDITOR'S VIDEO COMMENT: A holiday greeting and a special guest.
Dear reader, I feel very fortunate this Christmas season to be healthy, happy -- and employed when so many people are not. I count my blessings.
This is the first Christmas of my six decades that my parents are not alive to share it with me. Although we most often celebrated miles and miles apart, they were always a strong presence. I looked forward to the arrival of my mother's homemade anise cookies and my Christmas day phone call. I feel a loneliness at their absence, and yet I celebrate the many, many wonderful years I had with them.
I hope your holiday season is a good one, filled with friends and family. If you are experiencing hard times, as so many people now are, I wish you the good fortune of better times ahead in 2009.
RV Travel readers predicted the future! As this year ends -- and a dismal one it was for the RV industry -- I have a bit of boasting to do (on your behalf). For the last two years -- right about this time -- we have asked the readers of this newsletter whether they planned to buy an RV in the upcoming year. In 2006, 20 percent of you said, yes, you did plan to buy an RV in the year ahead, which was 2007.
Then, a year ago, we asked if you planned to buy an RV sometime in 2008. Well, only seven percent of you said yes -- almost two thirds fewer than the year before! And look what happened in 2008 -- RV sales plummeted! The readers of this newsletter predicted the future with stunning accuracy!
Next week I'll ask you about your RV buying plans for 2009. If you are a member of the RV industry or know someone who is, you might want to read or pass along the results. Considering that it would typically cost thousands of dollars -- if not tens of thousands of dollars -- to conduct a survey like this, the price of viewing our results (free) is a spectacular bargain!
The odd things you find in little museums A few days ago in my blog I wrote about a few of the weird things I have found in small-town and small-time museums. In the Western USA where I live, pioneer museums outnumber other museums by 10 to one. If you have never seen dentist tools from the 1890s, then you should visit a pioneer museum. In my blog, I wrote about two different two-headed creatures I have seen at museums. The two-headed calf pictured here is one of those animals. If you have seen a two-headed creature in a museum or have seen something else very unusual, please visit my blog and leave a comment.

Twitter.com is a cyber place where people write very short postings (usually about 20 words or less) about what they are doing right at that moment. I post several times a day. For example, I was just writing at my computer when I glanced out my window (which overlooks a wide expanse of Puget Sound) and what do you suppose floated by? An aircraft carrier, with a big number 72 on its side, which means it was the Abraham Lincoln! So I wrote a sentence in Twitter about how cool it was to see an aircraft carrier out your window. Oil prices at four year low! Good news for RVers and all motorists: The price of oil continues to drop, and is now at a four-year low. Light, sweet crude for February delivery fell $1.07 to $43.54 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Prices have tumbled 73 percent since July. The January contract, which closes on Friday, fell $1.42 to $38.64 after dropping as low as $37.68, levels last seen in the summer of 2004. JP Morgan on Thursday cut its 2009 price target for oil to $43 a barrel from $69, citing "ongoing deterioration in the world economic environment and the ensuing sharp contraction in global oil demand in both 2008 and 2009."

Propane leak? Perseverance sometimes required A shrill beeping noise coming up from a LP gas monitor indicates that not all is well with your system -- it may, in fact, mean a leak. The first thing to do at such a time is extinguish all pilot lights, open all windows, and turn off the propane at the tank. But what should you do next? Here is how RVtravel.com blogger Russ De Maris dealt with the problem.

Santa Barbara bans RV parking in some areas Responding to the growing number of people living in their RVs and the problems caused by some of those people, the Santa Barbara City Council voted Tuesday to grant the city the authority to restrict the parking of RVs near schools, child care centers, recreational facilities and churches, among other places serving vulnerable populations. In an effort to minimize the phenomenon of simply pushing the RVs from neighborhood to neighborhood, the council also directed the staff to expand a program called New Beginnings that allows RV dwellers to park in certain designated lots at night.

RV Doc diagnoses problem with erratic propane system
Dear RV Doctor, The water in our shower only stays hot for five to ten minutes. I tried to re-light the pilot on the water heater but can't get it to ignite. Also, my refrigerator is both AC and gas. Every other day I get a "check" light indicating the flame has gone out and it starts to defrost. And why will my furnace not light? I have gas in the tanks because I can still light the stove. Any info will be appreciated. --Derek Ferris

Reserve capacity versus amp-hour capacity
By Russ and Tina De Maris Many RVers have trouble sorting out terminology when buying batteries for their RV. Comparing "amp hour capacity" battery to battery is the best way to make comparisons. Amp hours tells you how many amperes of useful current are available. For example, a 100 amp-hour rated battery can deliver 5 amps of current for 20 hours (100 amp hour rating divided by 5 amps = 20 hours). Once you know how many "amp hours" per day you need, you can begin to shop for batteries with that sort of capacity. If the battery you're evaluating doesn't spell out its capacity in "amp hours," but rather in "reserve minutes," you can make an approximate comparison. Reserve capacity tells how long a battery can deliver 25 amps before it is effectively depleted. Multiply "reserve minutes" by a factor of .65 and you'll have an approximate "amp hour" equivalent for comparison.
Russ and Tina De Maris are the authors of RV Boondocking Basics.
Are you a veteran boondocker? Would you please share some of your tips and tricks at our RVtravel.com reader forum? We'll reprint some of your comments in this newsletter each week.

What's best, gas or diesel engine?
Dear Mark, I sold my 24' Class C motorhome and am shopping for something newer and more efficient, also larger. I'm tending toward the Class B+ Phoenix Cruiser, 27' with two slides. It comes as either gasoline or diesel. I've been told the additional cost for a diesel engine outweighs any gas mileage benefit unless you keep the rig for many years. But I also wonder if other things have been factored in, such as, cost of engine maintenance, cost differential for the fuel type (as gasoline prices rise, will diesel rise at the same rate, slower, faster? What about bio diesel? Is there a re-sale advantage to either one? Read Mark's response.

What weapon is best to defend against bad guys? "What are your means of a weapon in case of an emergency?" a forum member asks. "I know one should always practice safety, beware of your surroundings, cell phone to call 911, park so that your RV door is to the busy side (i.e. overnight at Wal-Mart, Travel Plaza), alarms, and so on. But what if you come in contact with folks who are up to no good? Do you have a gun, Tazer, mace, pepper spray, knife, axe, baseball bat? I feel naked out there because we do not carry any type of weapon to fight back. Seems like there are circumstances where one might need such a weapon for a defensive posture. What do you think?
Bad situation, leaky holding tanks What do you do if your holding tanks are leaking? Can you fix them yourself? That's what an RVer asked in our forum. Others are weighing in with their advice. If you want to read what they've posted or suggest a solution to this very unpleasant situation, please do so.
Is propane delivery available to RV parks? An RVer with built-in propane tanks plans to spend the winter in Florida at perhaps two to three RV parks. In the forum, he writes, "Seems to me that packing up the rig just to leave the park to refill my propane tank can be cumbersome. Is there some way to have propane delivered to refill my RV propane tank without having to leave the park?" Do you have advice for him?
Can you boondock at all Flying J truck stops? A forum member wants to know if there is a directory or another resource that tells which Flying J Truck Stops do NOT allow free overnight stays for RVs in their parking lots. Read how other RVers responded.
Are catalytic heaters safe? Here's a lively discussion that began with this question: "Are catalytic heaters safe in trailers, especially at night while sleeping if one or two windows are cracked? The new ones have low oxygen shutoff. It would save on battery power and probably propane over using the trailer furnace." What do you think?
