By Chuck Woodbury

Dear reader,
It was a rainy few days on the Oregon coast when I visited earlier this week. I was very happy to be camped in my dry, cozy, comfy motorhome. My campsite was only a few miles from Fort Clatsop, where the Lewis and Clark expedition holed up in the winter of 1805-1806. They were there nearly five months -- and every day but 12 it rained! I doubt any of the group returned to build a retirement home.

After our first night at the huge, activity-filled Astoria KOA (free pancake breakfast in the summer), we moved across the highway to Fort Stevens State Park (full 30 amp hookups for $22 a night). It was packed -- all 600 campsites. RVs, from huge motor coaches to pint-sized pop up trailers, filled about two-thirds of the sites, the rest tents. I was surprised to see many lightweight Aliner trailers -- unique pop up-type RVs with a hard roof. In its PR material, Aliner shows one of the trailers being pulled by a Smart Car: the smallest trailer weighs a mere 450 pounds.

Astoria, the first modern-day settlement on the Pacific Coast, is a pretty town of 9,800 right on the Columbia River where it spills into the sea. The town is often gray and windy. The four-mile Megler Bridge connects Oregon with Washington over the wide Columbia. When it was built in 1966, the bridge became the final link in U.S. 101 between Los Angeles, Calif., and Olympia, Wash. Before that, motorists crossed the river by ferry.

THE MOST FAMOUS LANDMARK in Astoria is the 125-foot Astoria Column built in 1926, and patterned after Trajan's Column in Rome. A little known fact about the tower is that in 1949 it served as part of the first cable TV system in America. And something else: it is perhaps the most likely place in the world to be struck by a flying aircraft. Not a big one, but a tiny one. The visitor center at the tower's base sells 40,000 toy balsa wood gliders a year at 75 cents each: carry it with you up the tower's 164 steps to the tower's top and let 'er go. If you're below, watch out for flying aircraft.

Fort Stevens State Park is huge -- about 10 square miles. The artillery batteries and underground bunkers from the Civil War through World War II are fun to explore. On the beach, see what's left of the wreck of the Peter Iredale, a four-masted, iron sailing ship that washed ashore in 1906. At low tide, its rusty remains are on the beach. Click the video to the right for a three-minute tour of Fort Stevens State Park.

Now I am back home and must quit goofing off and get back to work, including preparing for our two-hour webcast Saturday morning.

COMING TODAY FROM 10 A.M TO NOON
TO RV TRAVEL TELEVISION

Be sure to tune in later this morning, Aug. 15, when Gary Bunzer, the RV Doctor, returns to this newsletter via a live video webcast from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. (Pacific) to answer your questions. Gary is THE national authority on RV repair and maintenance.

Then. . . right after that, I'll join Gary for some fun, when we'll give away a couple dozen slightly damaged books, and DVDs from RVbookstore.com plus some RV gizmos and gadgets. And we'll have some fun trivia questions (be the first to answer by email and win a prize!). That will be from 11:02 a.m. to Noon (Pacific Time). So. . . as they say, "Be there or be square." Just return to this newsletter to see Gary the first hour, and then the two of us the second -- live and almost in person!

RV flooring need renewal? Here are some ways to do it
Got an older RV? Plenty of us out here do, and in tough or even uncertain economic times, buying a new RV may be impossible, or undesirable. Still, that doesn't kill off the desire for some of those new RV perks. Why not do a little RV remodeling? A change in floor coverings might be something you can undertake. Here are some ideas about how to do it.

Higher fees soon at California State Parks
You'll soon pay more to visit your favorite California State Park -- providing it's still open. RV food storage tips
Stocking up the RV with food is different than stocking up in a home. For one thing, your fridge back home is probably a whole lot bigger, and maybe you even have a stand alone freezer. Russ and Tina De Maris have some suggestions about handling your food needs on the RV road.

Another motorhome burns up
http://rvtravel.com/publish/images/videoicon.jpgSad to say, we have another motorhome fire to report, and with dramatic video. It seems that this year in particular, many, many RVs have caught fire and burned. Best way to make sure your's doesn't join the crowd? Keep it in good mechanical condition and carry a quality fire extinguisher (or two or three). Watch the video!

The ordeal of getting Internet access on the road
Digital RVer blogger Scott Koegler explains his problems getting online on a recent 10-day RVing trip. Scott has many ways to connect at his disposal, but on this trip, things simply did not go right. Find out what he learned from an RV park owner about "WiFi denial," and how campers were likely to blame for it. Read the story.

Repairing RV damage
Last week, RVtravel.com blogger confessed about a stupid move he made that ended up banging up the back right corner of his truck camper. "Without a doubt, [it was] one of the major dipstick moves of the year for me," he wrote. Now, Russ explains (and shows) how he fixed the damage.

Inside a modern "Gypsy" Wagon
You have never seen a travel trailer like this. We're not sure what this one is used for, maybe you can figure that out. This RV is so darn glittery that you might need your sunglasses just to look at these photos of it. Wow!

DID YOU KNOW? When RVtravel.com readers were asked which they would choose to give up first -- television or the Internet, more than 75% said television.

Free camping smack dab in the center of the USA
The Professor's lesson for us this week is about his visit to the exact geographical center of North America. Actually, humans can't visit the exact spot (just fish), but very, very close there is a monument, and even a place for RVers to spend the night for absolutely free! Jim says it's places like this -- off the major highways -- that make RVing a very wonderful thing. Read more.

"What you need to know in as few words as possible."

RV dealer Recreation Live LLC of Schertz, Texas has agreed to buy six Country Coach motor coaches and invest $4 million in return for a 50 percent equity stake in the company as part of a proposed deal intended to allow the RV maker to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Recreation Live would also open at least three "factory stores," as reported in the Eugene (Ore.) Register Guard.

Rangers at Glacier National Park are trying to find and relocate a 17-year-old grizzly bear and her two yearlings. The bears are used to humans and too dangerous to keep around. They have visited the Morning Star and Old Man Lake campgrounds for the past five years.

RVtravel.com sponsor Tracks RV Tours is now offering 15% off its 25-day Great Lakes RV tour beginning Sept. 9 in Niagara Falls.

Keep your eyes open Saturday and Sunday if you're in Yellowstone or Grand Canyon National Parks. President Obama and his family will visit both over the weekend.

Camping World has launched a "Cash for Campers" incentive, giving up to $7,500 cash allowance for motorized RVs when current RV owners purchase a new vehicle. It's designed to mirror the government program "Cash for Clunkers" currently supported by the automotive industry and Department of Transportation.

Admission is free to all U.S. National Parks this weekend. It's the last of three "free admission" days for 2009.

Car towed behind RV has problem. Faulty ground wire to blame?

Dear RV Doctor,
I tow a Ford Escort with my motorhome and am having a problem with my tow wiring. When I have my lights on and then turn on a turn signal, I notice a really faint blinking from the turn signal that is not supposed to be blinking. I'm confused by this. Any ideas? --Craig Burkholder

RVing Tip
Be careful of high water pressure at campgrounds
Water pressure at campgrounds can be extremely high and can cause damage to your RV plumbing system. Always use a water pressure regulator when you hook-up to the campground water supply. Always connect the water pressure regulator directly to the campground water source. This way you regulate the water pressure where it originates. It's also a good idea to turn the water supply off if you're going to be away from the campground for extended periods of time. --Mark Polk

RV Boondocking Tips
By Russ and Tina De Maris

Harness the wind to help with sewer smells
Some RVers have "the Devil's own time" dealing with disquieting smells from their black water holding tank. Your intrepid traveling tipsters suffered such a bane. Having "had enough," we installed a new sewer vent cap that rotates with the wind, promising relief by suctioning the smell out of the tanks with wind power. For us, a marked difference has been our experience. On road trips prior to installing our rotating roof vent, it was nearly a knock-down-drag-out to see who would have to open the coach door first on stops. The odors emanating from the throne room were fierce, and we finally resorted to "bagging" the toilet with a heavy garbage bag when traveling. Since the installation of the "360" we find the evil emanations rarely visit us, even when rolling down the highway. Others we've talked with who've gone to the device have also reported great improvements in "indoor air quality."

Tech Tips
with
Mark Polk

RV holding tanks and dump stations
RV dump stations are closing down for several reasons. Some, but not all of these reasons, are the costs and headaches involved to keep them operating and properly maintained, wrong chemicals used by RVers, and because of neglect and poor housekeeping by people who use the facilities. Because little water is used compared to a domestic waste water system, RV holding tank wastewater is far more concentrated. Adding to the problem are the chemicals used to break down the waste and control odors. This requires more treatment than a regular house waste system and complicates disposal. In many cases it's much easier to just close the dump station. Read more.

Tire scam in Utah?
In April, we were traveling from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City. At one of Utah's rest area/fast food stops, we had a man drive up next to our fifth wheel on an ATV and looking at our tires, told us that the tire on the 5er had a bulge, and he would be glad to change the tire and put our new spare on (Our tires are new.). We looked: it was the tire closest to the steps. We couldn't see anything. Rested, got diesel and proceeded on to Salt Lake. Another 100 or so miles, we stopped at another one and had another person come running out to the lot, and he first stopped at one motorhome and then came over to us and told us that the steel belting caused the fifth wheel to bounce coming into the driveway. This time it was on the other side. Another offer to change tire and put spare on. We are now back in Minnesota. It is August and we took the truck in to rotate the tires, and they are good for another 10,000 miles. Has this happened to anyone else?

She keeps on going after loss of husband
Hi! I have a 34' Newmar Star Canyon that I am determined to use and enjoy! My husband died last summer after a few trips in our RV. Since I had driven it and helped with the setup, I decided to keep it for now. I took short trips all during the school year (I teach music), then drove it to South Fork, Colorado this summer. I met friends there. The best part is my daughter and son-in-law met me there and drove it home! (I used their car and left earlier). Wish to comment?

Advice wanted on pre-purchase inspection
Does anybody take a used RV they are considering purchasing for a pre-purchase inspection (it's already passed state inspection)? I'd like to know if we're looking at any major repairs in the near future. What do you suggest we ask them to check? Any good reason a seller would balk at this request if we're doing it at our expense? Thanks for your suggestions.

Travel with a pet or not?
I love dogs. We had to put down our last two Schnauzers about two years ago. You all know how difficult that is. I think dogs are better than people. We now have two cats. They are great pets. My question is if you had your choice between going on the road without a pet vs going on the road with a pet, what would you choose? I'm not asking if you love your pet (that's a given with this bunch).

What do you use to cook with?
My wife and I were camping at one of our favorite New York state parks last weekend and got to wondering how do RVers cook when camping? To control costs, we find ourselves using electric slow cookers and fry pans more and more. For grilling, love our Coleman Travel Mate folding grill. The heavy cast iron grates work better than our grill at home. . . . Don't use the Coleman stove as much any more due to use of the electric fry pan which we still use outside. Can't beat the smell of bacon cooking in the morning outdoors. What is your preferred way of cooking?
