More about RVing in Scotland |
|
|
Here is another letter I received from an RVtravel.com reader about my comments in newsletters #341 and #342 about RVing in Scotland. -- Chuck
Hi Chuck:
I followed with interest your experiences RVing in Scotland. My wife and signed up for a Tracks to Adventure trip through the British Isles in May-June. Our experiences were much the same as yours and all-in-all a fantastic trip. The parks were mostly excellent and one thing you haven't mentioned is the really nice restroom/shower buildings, especially in comparison to many in the US. Full hook-ups means electricity which was generally okay except in Wales where some parks only provide 10 amps.
The RV's are more scaled down and most didn't have microwaves, but we still managed to pop a few breakers. Roads were narrow and really bad in towns, and people park wherever they want on either side of the street and sometimes just stop in the road to run into a store!
Driving through towns was fun in an RV (ours was a 23' Swift on a Fiat chasis). Three of us took our RV's on a side trip to visit St. Andrews where we ran into a host named Winston at the hotel who took us on a short walking tour around the golf course. Amazing place but, as you say, costly to play. With the US dollar about 1/2 of an English pound I expected things might cost a little less but, no, prices were as much as in the U.S. and mostly higher. We did give the putting course in St. Andrews a try which was fun. -- Gale Wilson _________________ Get the latest RV news headlines on Twitter.

RVing in the UK |
|
|
Hi Chuck,
Just browsing through your Scotland articles and the comments from our friends David and Linda Goodsell - thought you might like to know that there are about 10,000 RVs registered in the UK today ranging from the smallest up to the maximum size allowed of 40ft (12 metres) by 8ft 4inches (2.55 Metres). April next year (2009) will see legislation changed to allow us to import 2.6 metre wide RVs but still limited to 12 metres long.
The difference in the UK from the USA is that we consider RVs only to be motorhomes - we don't count trailer tents or 'caravans' - we only count A, B or C class motorhomes as RVs.
We also have our own RV camp grounds guide - www.the-big-pitch-guide.com - one version of which covers the UK and Ireland whilst the other version covers the whole of the European Continent.
Just a couple of weeks ago we saw the most expensive RV in the UK - a Country Coach Allure valued at £300,000 (or approx $500,000!) and just for interest sake, we also have a thriving full-timers community. _________________ Mo and Dick Kingswell

As a Scot RVing throughout the West Coast of the US, it is great to hear all the stories of RVing in my homeland. The roads especially in the Highlands do make it tricky, but the countryside is stunning!
I am loving my trip here - travelling with my dog in a 29-foot Lexington.
Just new to all this; so loving the community!
