Traveling the USA by RV for $45 a day |
|
|
In issue 345 of the RVtravel.com newsletter (Sept. 20, 2008), I reported on a group of 15 RVers who are spending a month traveling the American West on a budget of $45 a day. What do you think of that? Any comments? The issue and my report is at http://rvtravel.com/publish/newsletter/issue345.shtml _________________ Get the latest RV news headlines on Twitter.

I am confused.
Did the 15 pay $1,400 each for a pot total of $21,000 @ $677.40 a day?
$45 a day for 15 people would be $3.01 each per day. After fuel & campground cost. Not much left to eat on.
I haven't seen many KOA campgrounds where two campsites plus the extra charge over two people per site could be gotten for the $45.
I just got back from a solo 5,000 mile trip of 134 days. My average cost per day for fuel MH, fuel toad, campgrounds, food, 1 motorcycle rally, 1 MH rally, 2 motorcycle races, and other odds & ends was $38.17 per day with only 13 days of fee camping.
I have done the 134-day trip for 9 years now and it has never cost me over $40 a day any time. _________________ Larry |

Nit-picking. Being from the west coast will excuse you this time. You spelled it the way it is pronounced. The folks are not from Redding, PA but from Reading, PA. |

$45 a Day - WITH Conditions! |

Silly heading is basically untrue. Having 15-16 people and 4 RVs does not result in the same cost for 2 people in 1 RV. _________________ P. Vaino

Camping for $45 a Day: No Way |
|
|
The title is VERY misleading. Camping is really $45 per person per day. A couple would be $90 and a family of 4 would be $180 a day. In reality camping for most of us counting gas and campground fees is closer to $100 a day for fees and fuel, especially here on the west coast. A neighbor just came back from Oregon and paid as high as $129 for a KOA spot in Santa Cruz, CA.
During the summer it is almost impossible to find a state campground (non-desert) without reservations and commercial campgrounds run $50 and up. Gas at $4+ a gallon at 8 mpg is $50 for a 100 miles. Most of us would like to get more than 100 miles under our belt per day. Even if we average 2 nights at each campground, it is still only 200 miles for $50 per day. I am not including food or entertainment, admissions, etc., as we eat at home and do some entertainment things anyway.
I like your newsletter for its information and honesty, but this title sounds more like someone campaigning that the person who actually has the job. |

He didn't say everyone could do it. He said these people did it. Relax and enjoy the story. _________________ Ken

We completed a 130-day trip to Alaska hitting diesel cost in Canada as high as $6.55 American. Our average cost per day was just under $100.
That was with some free camping in our National Forest. Ed |

RVing for $45/Day |

Picky, picky, picky! I'm more interested in how the Gulfstream Class C handled the Rockies towing the tag-a-long...uphill and DOWN. _________________ You can't change the wind, but you can reset your sail. |

| Saw one of the MH pulling a pop-up in West Yellowstone this summer. I was wondering what was going on. Thanks. |

15 People on a West Trip |
|
|
| 15 people each paid $1400. This also included entry into Bar J singers in Jackson, and several other activities. There was money enough to give back $300 to each person. My RV class C had a V10 Ford engine and an E-450 chassis which pulled the trailer up the mountains with no problem. Most campsites let us stay hooked on pull-through sites. This price included food, campsites; gas. We followed mostly Lewis and Clark, the Oregon Trail History, Yellowstone National Park, Olympic National Park, Mount Saint Helens, and many historic visitor centers. Had many excellent cooks and drivers on this trip. RRM Romans 8:1 |

Long Trips |
|
|
| We just got back from a 5000-mile trip from Missouri to Washington and Oregon and back. We spent 141 days on the trip. And we spent around $5500. That comes out to about $39 a day. That counts gas and lodging. We don't count food because we would have to eat if we were home. We could make it cheaper by hosting at some parks. We stayed in state parks most of our trip. I had a brother who took a two-week trip to Florida. With airfare and motel it cost him $3000 for the 2 weeks. And I know other people who spend over $3000 for short cruises. We thought it was money well spent. Enjoyed every second of the trip. Most of our campsites were paid when we made the reservations last November. We spent about $1300 for gas the first 2 weeks getting there. We didn't have to put even 1 gallon into RV from June 1st to September 1st. We filled up at the Oregon/Washington border and didn't have to fill up again until we headed home. So we spent another $1200 in September on the way home. So from June - September we just spent money on the normal everyday living. |

| I have been on four trips to the western US with Ralph (my grandfather) and have loved every minute of every trip! I will definitely continue the tradition with my family in the future! |
