'92 Geo Tracker 4x4 |
|
|
Help! I'm looking at a '92 Geo Tracker 4x4 w/auto trans and wondering if I could tow it w/4 down? I'm no mechanic so I don't want to have to modify anything, just hook it up and drive away. I've towed my Geo Metro w/a 34' Bounder and a 28' Coronado 4 down but I'm considerably older now and not as strong. My RV is a Roadtrek 170/Dodge Ram chasis. _________________ bye4nowdotcom...

According to this conversation since it's 4WD, you can. _________________ Donna [Froggi] & Stu

Yup, got a contract on 6/1 with close scheduled for 7/31. Since then it's been moved to 7/17 close with possession on 7/21. Now I'm running helter-skelter to find the right rig for me as well as sell all my stuff. It's amazing how much STUFF you accumulate....<g> _________________ Donna [Froggi] & Stu

ROFLMAO!!!! I'm busily sorting clothes right now:
o clothes to go inside rig
o off-season clothes to be stored somewhere in rig
o clothes to store at daughter's that now fit
o clothes to store at daughter's that are slightly small
o clothes to give away or consign _________________ Donna [Froggi] & Stu

no shortage of stuff for your daughter to remember you by I see.
I ALWAYS take too many clothes but am always glad I have more choices. The 5 months I lived in my leetle Roadtrek in SoCA one winter I ended up going to the UPS Store and shipping some back home. Last winter was only 3 months and I had learned a bit so didn't take as many but still had things that never saw the lite of day.
Sure hope we cross paths somewhere someday, not everybody appreciates my humor. _________________ bye4nowdotcom...

I like having choices. You should have seen how much I got crammed into my bags on my motorcycle trips last year.
DD offered her basement for storage so I'm taking her up on it. I bought a lot of clothes over the last year and it makes no sense to get rid of them all. I'll just call her and say, "Okay....send me 2 blue socks, 1 red pair, those black shorts, three short sleeve shirts - at least one pink, oh and that dark green sweatshirt." <vbg>
Wait till I hit the closet and SHOES....oh my!!!
We'll just have to make a point of meeting up on the road! _________________ Donna [Froggi] & Stu

Boy, do I understand! |

We're getting ready to move into our 26 ft. RV and trying to get rid of 22 years worth of stuff we just can't live without!
Also, this thread is about towed vehicles and we're looking around for the best 4X4 to tow, best meaning cheapest used vehicle that can go almost anywhere.

Pardon us for getting off track. To address your query, I've only towed a Geo Metro and was very happy with it but of course it's not a 4x4. I'm sure others have. This post will bump the topic back up to the top, I think. _________________ bye4nowdotcom...

Geo Tracker |
|
|
I have a 96 Tracker and love it. Coupla notes though...
The auto transmissions in Trackers are notoriously weak. The three-speed was anemic and failure prone; the four-speed is only marginally better. Don't remember about the 92's, but make sure you have manual hubs and NOT the auto hubs. The autos are a pain and will fail. Additionally, the manual hubs (and wheel bearings) should be checked, repacked and/or replaced before towing. The bearings usually go by 100k and can really ruin your day.
There is much speculation about the timing belt and valve clearance on Trackers. Know this: some engines (probably will have 2 or 4 cams) are what is known as an "interference" engine. In layman's terms: if the timing belt breaks while the engine is operating (or is improperly installed), the engine may self-destruct, at least the valves etc. So always replace the timing belt if in doubt, preferably on a 60K interval.

4X4 Geo |
|
|
Hi,
I have a 2002 4X4 Chevy Tracker (their new name) with auto hubs which may not be the same as yours mechanically. I have been flat towing it for 4 years with no problems (over 80,000 miles). You put the transmission in park, the transfer case in neutral and the ignition key in the first click. However, you are not supposed to exceed 55 mph and you must stop and run the engine for 3 minutes every 200 miles to replenish the transmission fluid.
I cannot think of their name but they advertise transmission lube pumps and drive shaft disconnects in many RV magazines. If you call their 800 number, they will tell you for sure. They are very helpful and told me that even though I must continue to run the engine for 3 minutes every 200 miles, I could ignore the 55 mph limitation. That was 3 years ago and I still have not had any problems. _________________ gerry |

Tracker Hubs |
|
|
Well, mine is a 1996 and I think the earlier reference was to an even older Tracker.
After 5 years or so, the vacuum seals, lines and associated hardware become a bit more finicky. In all fairness, if your toady is REALLY a toady and never leaves the blacktop or sees lots of nasty salty inclement weather, your auto hubs may last a long time. Warning though: if you only engage your hubs (into 4 wheel drive) occasionally, you might find that they strand you when you least expect it. I didn't find out that one of my mechanical hubs was sticking (slow to engage/disengage) until I landed on some hard pack/ice and couldn't get it to budge without pulling hard to one side (only one hub engaged). If you don't need the 4x4 though, who cares?
Cheers. _________________ Tater |

Thanks Taterhead.
I don't get off road very much, but I'll watch out for that problem, especially since mine will be 5 years old before long. _________________ gerry |

One last thing on trackers! |
|
|
You didn't say the engine on your tracker....I believe the newer V6 motors have a chain (not belt) and are good for 100,000 plus on the chain with only an inspection. Otherwise, the 4 banger belts are 60K.
Cheers. _________________ Tater |
