Hi netlanders,

Is there a list available about Flying J sites where boondocking is
prohibited?

(similar to Wal-Mart "No Overnight Parking" Stores )

To be honest, I've never seen a Flying J that didn't allow parking as long as they had a truck parking area.

Never heard of a "J" that wasn't excited to see an RV. They make their corporate policy pretty plain and it's RV-friendly all the way.

They will provide you with a brochure if you stop at a location that shows all their sites and provides a map. The info is also available on the Internet but the brochure is handier.

Most of these letters end with the suggestion that we all thank the establishment where we just stayed by buying fuel or having a meal, etc. Good advice.

I stay at Flying Js all the time and they all embrace the RVer with RV-specific parking areas. I have found two that just don't have the room for RV-specific parking: Florida I-10 at Tallahassee; Florida I-4 at Seffner (next to Lazy Days), but there is a Camping World and a TA at the same intersection. But even though you can still go on the truckers side and I have never had a trucker object, especially if you follow the truckers' rules. Don't go into the truckers parking area with your headlights on after dark; use your parking lights. Dont take a pull-through site if you don't need it. Stay between the parking lines. Don't push out your slides, and use common sense and courtsey.

At Seffner, Florida, you can always go across the street to the T/A. Twisted Evil

FJ is always welcoming RVs except for one location. I am frequenting FJ locations whenever possible, due to the fact that I have a subscription to their WI-FI service for my business. They are awesome in providing excellent customer service. The manager at the Cokeville, WY location even came running with an extension cord for my laptop cause there was no outlet in the driver's lounge.

As I said there is one location and that is downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. Huge signs all over the place: "No RV Parking." They prefer trucks to park in the designated RV spaces. 2 of the managers stated they want RVs to move on. After I explained that I subscribe to the WI-FI service and I needed to park there (there was plenty of space available), they stated:
"We'll see about that" and walked off. They did not even let us stay in the truck area, although there was plenty of space there too.

I filed a nice complaint with the CEO of the company (I always go right to the top) and I just hope the managers got fired, because I had a right to park there. I have talked to many store managers of FJ and they are all awesome in providing hospitality. One of them stated, "Of course, the longer Very Happy you stay here, the more you spend." And that's true.

Not all Flying Js are corporate owned. Many are franchise locations. While the corporate Flying Js welcome RVers, many of the franchise locations do not. If you go to FlyingJ.com and check out the locations, you can find out if a particular location is Corporate or Franchise. While you're on their website, you can also check for services offered at a given location. Many times they will list parking availability.

There are some Flying Js where RV parking spaces are either very few in number or non-existent. The old Flying J in Limon, CO (recently replaced by a new one WITH RV spaces) comes to mind, as does the one on the east side of Kansas City, MO.

The OvernightRVParking Yahoo Group lists many Flying Js as well as other overnighting places.

This is an old post about the old FJ at 900 West and 2100 South. The place was torn down and a new one built about a year ago. It has a bunch of RV/Bobtail spaces in the "cars only" side.

The old one didn't want RVs because of a shortage of spaces. Remember for you, it's a choice; for the truck drivers, they often get there just as they run out of time that they can legally drive for the day. RVs can park on the local streets, but not trucks. RVs have plumbing, trucks don't, so they need the facilities at the truck stop when all you need is a place to park.

I'm never bothered by truck stops with "No RV" policies. Those guys (and gals) in the 18-wheelers are abused by EVERYONE, from shippers and receivers to drivers on the road, to all of the states and towns with trucks-only laws (aimed at bringing in money from fines) to -- yes -- even the people who run truck stops, who often charge 20% more for everything just because the drivers can't go elsewhere due to lack of parking.

If the driver who hasn't seen home, spouse and family for a month or so needs the space, I'm sure not going to take it away from him.

We also need to present the other side of the picture. RVers who park overnight in the truck parking area in truck stops -- even when there's plenty of room and even when told by the truck stop to park there -- are at risk from truckers' actions. I know a professional RV delivery driver, who is a licensed DOT interstate carrier, who has had RVs vandalized, connecting pins removed from his toad tow bar, and safety cables cut. This was done by individual truckers who took it upon themselves to protect "their" territory, the truck parking area, from RV interlopers.

I presume that most truckers would never vandalize an RV just to make a point, but there are a few bad apples in the barrel. (Just as most RVers would never camp out rather than park at a truck stop, or would never dump holding tanks where it's improper to do so, but there are a few bad apples in that barrel as well.)
