Roads are good. All asphalt and two-lane. From Furnace Creek (park headquarters and biggest by far settlement in park), you take SR 190 west to Lone Pine, 106 miles away. Make sure you get fuel at every station as they are few and far between. Last one westbound is Stovepipe Wells.

From Stovepipe you start a long, long climb that is gradual but should not be a problem because it won't be too hot yet. When you reach the summit, start down into Panamint SLOW AND STAY SLOW. It is a long and steep grade.

When you start up from Panamint, the worst part is about a mile from Panamint Springs. There is absolutely no shoulder for about 1/8 mile on the right side and it is a long way down.

Once you get to the summit, you are home free. When you get to the place where the road goes off to the left, take that fork if going to the south. If going north, go straight ahead into Lone Pine. If low on fuel go into Lone Pine. Nothing until Pearsonville, about 50 miles south.

The view you will have of Mt. Whitney and the eastern Sierra prior to the fork in the road and approaching Lone Pine is absolutely spectacular.

Watch for another Colorado 27RL... We'll be doing almost the same thing around the 2nd week to middle of March. Probably will opt to go out toward the south rather than over Panamint. That is one hell of a hill.

Happy trails
