Replacing the Duals with the New Extra Wide Michelin! |
|
|
I'm trying to get info on the new extra wide tire from Michelin that replaces the dual tires with one.
Does anyone have any input about stability or such? It's supposed to add mileage and reduce weight of the rig. |

I like the idea. It might even ride better. However I have experienced two tire blowouts on the right inner rear tires on two motorhomes. I sure was glad there was another one to ride on until I could get stopped and then to a tire store. _________________ Bo & Jan RVing for fun |

Bo hit a great point. With duals, if you blow a front tire, you can temporarly take an outer rear tire and mount on the front to get you to a repair center. I seriously looked at the super singles a couple of years ago; however, due to the cost of the conversion and limited ride improvement, I decided not to go that way. A lot of super singles are run in fleets out west, and I visited with several drivers and I have yet to find one who had a real positive report about them. Fleets like them mainly for the weight saving that allows them more payload.

Singles vs Duals |
|
|
| I had a class C with wide singles on the rear years ago. It was scary to drive in a cross wind as it blew around quite a bit. Also, as stated your spare tire would only fit one end or the other as the tires on the rear would be different than the front. When I traded motorhomes for another class C, I made sure to get one with duals. You would not believe how much more stable that one was. I would not put singles on anything larger than a class B. The new wide singles might be better, but I doubt it. Just my opinion. |

Years ago when I was a kid (make that many, many years ago) living on the farm, Crown Zellerbach hauled logs past our place, and when I was in high school, they tried going that route with the fat boy for a while on their log trucks but switched back after about a year. I didn't hear the reason why they didn't stay with them. My guess would be that with a flat, they were stuck until the tire truck could get to them, whereas with duallies, they could limp into the shop. _________________ Pat & Helen

Fat Boy tires |

| Simply put, the tires are next to useless on snowy and slick roads. |
