RV Insurance |

Hi to all,
Not sure what is the best insurance company for my RV Class C 30'. Would like to hear from you all about this concern.

I am using Progressive because Progressive and Good Sam are the only ones who insure "full-timers." I am currently not a "full-timer," but I wanted the option to switch if I wanted without having to switch companies.
Most auto insurance companies will insure RVs if you are "part-timing." But not all of them will insure you for "full-timing."
I think Good Sam might be cheaper than Progressive. However, when I called Good Sam, they INSISTED I had to provide my SSN to get a quote. There is nothing in the law that gives any insurance company statutory authority to REQUIRE your SSN just to get a quote. They can't MAKE you. Not for a quote. If they refuse to give you a quote because you refuse to provide your SSN, then take your business elsewhere. However, once you sign on the dotted line, then insurance companies WILL ask you for your SSN. Reason? Some insurance marketing idiot decided there is a correlation between your FICO score and whether or not you file claims. Higher the FICO score, the better a risk you are. To me, this is an improper use of the SSN and of the FICO data, which was intended for credit cards, not insurance companies. But what can we say.
OK, off my soapbox now.

Hurray for you!
I consider it a major invasion of my privacy for someone to ask me for information as sensitive and fragile as my SS#.
(Open notice - for what good it will do) - If a company requires my social security number to open an account WITHOUT A TRULY VALID REASON, I figure they are either too corrupt or too lazy to deserve my business or my $$.
With a person's SS# and information that can be Googled by any competent web searcher, I can own them! Just remember that.
Insurance . . .. Just remember, it's all a gamble. The insurance company isn't giving away money. They are making profits and employing thousands of people on YOUR premiums. In the long run averaged out, you WILL lose $$ - guaranteed. Economics 101 at work.
Am I recommending you go self-insured? Absolutely not. But I am on everything that is not required by law (automotive liability). And we won't get into the fact that you can be self-insured there. In this day and time, with greedy plaintiffs, greedier lawyers, and liberal juries, it's just not a practical solution for anyone with the wherewithal to do it. _________________ Norm & Janet

There are more choices out there than just Progressive and Good Sam, even for full-timers. You might want to check with an RV insurance broker. They can give you rates from multiple companies and based on your home base location. The one I use is Farm and City: 800-331-1520. Ask for Trese as she is the RV specialist. She is very friendly, easy to work with and understands the RV business. _________________ Mike, Nancy and the Fuzzies

OK, I know this thread started with an innocent question about who is the best RV insurance company. And then I got on my soapbox.
Porscheracer, I agree with you about not wanting to give out my SSN. But what are you going to do when the CELL PHONE companies are asking for it now so they can check your FICO score? This irritates me! The only way around it is..... After they check your FICO score, you call them up, scream and stamp your feet, and ask for the information to be removed. Sprint and T-Mobile did this for me. On T-Mobil, I only had the account for one day. I was "Trying it out." After I cancelled the account, I called them up, screamed and stamped my feet, and said, "you do not have statutory authority to have this information. The account has been cancelled. I want the information removed NOW or you will hear from my attorney!" They took it out. Sprint, who I have had service with for years, took it out and let me select a pin of my own.
This irritates me. Once they have the information, they do not take any measures to remove it, even though nothing in the law gives them statutory (Yes, I love that word.....) authority to have it. So you have to be pro-active and scream and stamp your feet.
*********************************************
OK, back to the original question about RV insurance. Again, most auto policies will insure RVs, but not all of them insure for "full-timing." If you want to "Full-time," then Good Sam and Progressive are your choices. If you are a "part timer," then shop around.

That is certainly NOT TRUE! There are lots more insurance companies that offer fulltimers insurance than just Progressive and Good Sam (whose insurance is offered through GMAC...Good Sam isn't the one doing the insuring).
As Motor31 said, call several insurance brokers who specialize in RV insurance: AON, Gilbert, Miller's, RV America, Explorer, et al. (Just Google each of these).
You can also call some insurance companies directly who offer RV insurance, including fulltimer's insurance: Progressive (mentioned above), Foremost, Geico, etc.
To the OP: No one can tell you what the best insurance company is for YOU and YOUR SITUATION because there are simply too many factors that go into figuring premiums...such things as state/county/city where the RV is "garaged," what you are insuring, what KIND of insurance you need ("regular" RV insurance or fulltimers), levels of coverage, your driving record, even your credit score goes into figuring premiums. The only way you can find out which insurance company is best for YOU is to get on the telephone and start making some calls. _________________ LindaH

I stand corrected! Wow! When I looked for RV insurance, I was told that for full-timers, it's basically Progressive or Good Sam.
Also, on the Foremost thing, when I lived in eastern Washington, my agent refused to write a Foremost policy because he said that Good Sam was cheaper, and about 99% of anyone he wrote a Foremost policy for ended up cancelling and going to Good Sam. When I moved to Western WA, the agent I used (who was with the same company as the eastern WA agent), said that he writes LOTS of Foremost policies, and doesn't get a lot of cancellations. Depends where you live.

Someone was giving you really bad advice.

That is certainly true since insurance companies often don't offer insurance in ALL 50 states. _________________ LindaH

There are multiple threads on this site alone that discussed insurance. Farm and City was mentioned more than once as well as other specific agencies who underwrite or market RV insurance. The information is out there and it helps to shop around as much as possible.
I prefer brokers for quotes as, like travel agents do, they can get multiple quotes from different agencies for comparison not only of rates but coverages as well.
Rates as well as providers will vary by state as not all companies are licensed to sell insurance in all states/countries. _________________ Mike, Nancy and the Fuzzies

I researched a dozen insurance companies both at price and coverage. I found that National Interstate had the best coverage and prices, and they are only through brokers like Explorer RV and RV insurance. But I went with Allstate and their new RV insurance. They were only a couple of dollars more than National and I also got a storage shed coverage from them as well for our items in storage, and no one else had that coverage. _________________ Lee and Fran

GEICO is now offering RV insurance (according to TV ads...) but the ad doesn't indicate if they offer full-timers insurance. Anyone know?

Call them or send an e-mail to the company. The answer will (may) depend on what state you are registered in. For questions like that you really need to go to the source rather than second-hand anecdotes. Your coverage is something you need to be sure about. _________________ Mike, Nancy and the Fuzzies

Yes, GEICO offers fulltime RV insurance...I emailed them to ask that exact same question and got an affirmative answer back. I have no further information on their coverage. If you're interested, give them a call to get a quote. _________________ LindaH

Ask your auto provider. We have a multiple policy discount for the truck, travel trailer and storage space. While it isn't as cheap as it gets, I'll pay a bit more for peace of mind. We were unaware that our insurer (USAA) offered RV insurance until one of the 'blips' on their webpage mentioned it.
We have a motorcycle too, but I've been using Markel for bike insurance for over a decade and will give them my business until they (or I) are gone.
Rumor had it last year that Markel would offer RV insurance in the future. So far they do recreational vehicles only: motorcycles, boats, ATVs. They have OUTSTANDING customer service and handle claims so efficiently and quick you get dizzy, AND they're ridiculously cheap. Am I affiliated with Markel? Nope. But I am a very happy/loyal customer and hope they do start insuring RVs.
Like I said, check with your provide. Even if they don't offer it, they might be able to suggest someone. And don't automatically take the cheapest policy. Do your homework (try the BBB or look for references in the campground too).
