Wastewater Tank Repair |
|
|
'Sup everyone. I'm a nube, Just got a '78 Dodge (Delta) class C.
I'm sure this topic has been covered a million times, but here's one more. Both the grey water and black water tanks are leaking. They have been repaired once before me, but didn't hold. I have removed the tanks and cut an access hole in the top of each tank: going to try it from the inside. My question is what product would be best to repair abs plastic? I can see a crack or two and I was envisioning using some kind of epoxy that I can pour into that corner of the tank and roll it around to ensure that it runs into every crack and crevice, but I have heard that epoxy doesn't stick to abs. Need first hand advice. Is epoxy the way to go or is there another method?
Thank you all so much and I will be back! Much to share and ask. |

| Use fiberglass cloth material with ABS cement and you'll have success. Should be available from any good RV supply store. Drill the end of the cracks with a 1/8" drill to stop the crack(s) from spreading first. |

Kinda sounds like what I had in mind; however, because of the location of the damage which is almost directly under a 3" pipe that the last guy installed and pushed it quite far into the tank, I'm not sure a fiberglass "blanket" would suffice. What do you think about mixing abs cement with just bulk fiberglass (the dry powdered fiber stuff) and then applying it with like a 2" paint brush dabbing it on, in and around the cracks, and maybe doing this a couple times? _________________ if you want to be seen----stand up

| I don't have any experience beyond what I offered before. In that case I had cracks and repaired them from the outside without removing the tanks. However, I would think the strength of fiberglass cloth would be superior to powdered fiberglass. It is quite hard when saturated with the ABS solvent and not prone to run away. |

Well, alrighty then. I'll give it a shot. Worse comes to worst, a new tank. Thanks for your input. I'll post my results as soon as I can get to it. _________________ if you want to be seen----stand up

Well, I got a fiberglass cloth, not the big rough stuff, but a much finer looking cloth. Applied it to the area using abs cement, not multi-purpose stuff, the actual black glue. Brushed it on evenly into/onto around the hole and cracks. I have not tested it yet but just by looking at the repair, it's a pretty safe bet that it will work.Sometimes you can just tell. I am really happy with the results and will do the same to the grey water tank which is warming in the basement. Thanks for the tip. _________________ if you want to be seen----stand up

Thanks for the tip. | Well, it took about five or six coats of abs glue, but they are finally fixed. The damage was a little more invovled than I thought.
2 quarts of glue--$15.76
5 hours labor------free
1 fiberglass cloth--$8.50
Tanks that don't leak-----priceless _________________ if you want to be seen----stand up

I was told that fiberglass won't stick to ABS for very long, but maybe the way you did it, it will. I hope so.
Eternabond Tape will fix holding tanks and it will stick to ABS. You have to roll it after applying with something like a wooden wallpaper seam roller to get all the air out and get a good bond.
If you have ever tried to get Eternabond off anything, you know that it really does stick!
